All these options depend upon the user and the computer

If you practise safe hex and vigilance you don't need a resident av or software firewall, even avira and comodo can be a nuisance and impact performance on older computers?

My hardware NAT from my router supplement windows firewall, firefox with no script and my judgement protect me from driveby malwear infections, in the last year I have spent a lot of time at the antimalware forums, it's incredible to see how many people have loaded their computers with so much protecion they take forever to boot and do anything and they still manage to get infecting to a point that the best remedy is a clean install.

The best tool you will ever have is sitting in the chair.

Hi Chewy. So basically by this>The best tool you will ever have is sitting in the chair.< you mean hypervigilance?

Security programs hose almost as many computers as malware does but both trail far behind user error

I stand corrected, the JV 16 PowerTools version 1.4.1 that I have on this computer is a pay version.

I got the 1.3.0.195 from a last freeware site. It is good enough.

So like they say at the firmware page "And if you know what you're doing." Makes perfect sense. Still a lot of ground to cover so I'll pace myself in respect to uncharted waters and learn the ins and outs of any software/hardware b4 taking that inevitable plunge into a clean install after f....ng things up. Better this than this . Although the latter ultimately leads to this , but not after unnecessary aggravation which could of been avoided in the 1st place.

Also if you have a 32 bit OS and use a protection like Sandboxie, that has a free version,
you don't want to use anti-virus resident shield type of protection. There will be a conflict.
I have the services for anti-spyware and anti-virus set to Manual and Sandboxie also.
As soon as I download updates and do scans with the anti-virus I stop their services.
When I'm done surfing or running any programs Sandboxed, I close the Sandbox Control and stop the Sandboxie service.

It may seem like a lot of manual intervention but if you get the names of the services you can stop them with an alias or batch command that you can name to something (funny there's a name for stuff that's easy to remember but I forgot it!!) easier to remember.

Damn!! Who ever came up with mnemonic must have a sense of irony!! Who the hell can remember that?

Hi Chewy. I remember you mentioning the hardware NAT w/router in a previous thread. I don't remember if one can still use a router if you only have 1 computer hooked up. Is that possible? If so where do you get it? From your isp provider or a computer store either online or out here. Thnx.

some broadband modems, especially those with wireless and/or multiport switches have a builtin nat

a little network analysis will tell you

                    start run cmd

                    ipconfig /all

                    192.168.2.1/

an address like this show the NAT part

                    69.73.114.xxx

this is a real address assigned to your internet connection

                    shows your real ip add

without a nat you need a damn good software firewall

I entered that ipconfig /all in the run window and a quick black screen popped up then disappeared. Did I do it right? The geobytes did come up w/my ip address. You saying if it would of come up like this 69.73.114.xxx
                      that I would have a nat/router?

You have to open the command prompt then enter the command. Open the run box, then type command prompt. Then do the ping command or the ipconfig/all.

Ok. It came up this time and w/this>192.168.2.1/ + some xtra digits which it said was my ip address. Underneath was a submask w/some different numbers. Everyone has the same 1st #'s as that 192.168.2.1? Also, do you mean that after those #'s would come something like this>69.73.114.xxx which you say is the NAT part? Confused.
