my only problem,is vista. it doesnt like most of my software.

i was considering doing a dual boot,but from what i have read,it looks like i need a vista install disc to do it. my vista is pre installed.

i am actually thinking about just xp and forgetting about vista.

any thoughts on this?

I've been toying with the idea of picking up that very PC for awhile
now. I've never tried 64 bit XP but I hear it doesn't run smoothly. If you
can live with < 6 GB Ram being used I guess you could add 32 bit XP to
it.

On my 32 bit Vista machine I'm using Paragon Drive Backup imaging
program. After I had done a couple of restores and had faith that it could
restore even if I messed up my partitions, I tried the Vista disk management and sure enough I was able to slice off a partition and dual boot Vista/XP. If you don't have the Vista install CD then you need the XP install CD that has the system repair console facility. There's a guide for adding XP to an existing Vista PC. The guide to use is the one that tells you to use VistaBootPro to fix the Vista boot manager after installing XP.

But the missing step is copying the XP boot files to the XP partition. ntldr and ntdetect.com need to be copied from the XP CD to the root of the partition where you installed XP. Otherwise when you select the XP from the Vista boot manager screen you get "ntldr missing or corrupt" error msg.

Let me know after you've used that PC for awhile because it looks like
a screamin' machine!!!

btw Paragon claims that the latest Paragon Drive Backup Personal Edition supports Vista 64 bit. For $40 it's worth the piece of mind. Course if you don't have stuff installed it's about the same as using the restore discs, but
it's good to have for later down the road.

What is it, that it doesn't like? I have not found a program yet, that I could not run on my 64 machine. When you load them are they loading in the X86 file or the program file? I'm probably just too dumb to know to understand, but I am confused. Tell me a little more, because I am interested in these problems, since I have not expierenced them myself.

Other than having a few difficulties getting the right drivers for some of my hardware when I first bought the machine, which has now been 10-11 months ago, but I was able to solve those problems with a little trial and error.

I have basically the same machine, except I believe yours is the 45nm technology and mine is the old 65nm, Q6600.

I think MSFT plans to release "Windows 7" in Jan 2009 ... so that might be their Fix for the screw ups in Vista!

As far as OS ... I would go with XP Pro SP3 ... not only all the freeware we use run on XP much better ... if you GAME ... they tend to run smoother and better.

@gonwk this model has been available at many BestBuy stores for several weeks now.
For a grand and some change(for just the tower/keyboard/mouse in a box) it comes with 6 GB ram 10/100/1000 ethernet and 750 GB Sata HD.

I took a look at it a couple weeks ago and the 512 MB video card has a standard VGA output in addition to connections for more advanced video. Good for me because I use a kvma switch and need a VGA connection or it's buy a real big desk and find someplace to put it!!

I would hesitate to remove the 64 bit Vista esp since you can multiboot XP and see how it is with each OS before making any decisions. Most people I talk to online with Vista Home Premium 64 bit tell me they don't have problems. Granted they probably aren't installing hardware. But I don't want to install hardware either. I just want to plug the thing into my network.

The thing that concerns me is that it's also a Media Center PC so it probably has a couple of dozen scheduled tasks and services to publish media files. So it will be the
same headache to quiet the HD as I'm having with the present machine. I'm wicked curious how many fps I can get out of HC Encoder with the 4 cores going though!

Hi jwo62. Man w/all the problems well noted w/vista and media center you really went all out on a limb w/this. I'll be the 1st to say I'm not that savvy w/this whole computer business, but a novice I'm not. Imo I think you should go w/your gut and stay w/xp if you could install it on there solo. Like gonwk said Billy Boy and his henchmen are planning to release that 7 version soon. That alone should tell you how thing's have been w/vista etc...

Btw didn't your pc come w/an install disc just in case you had to do a clean install? I don't know about hp or vista, but my dell came w/an mce 2005 install disc w/driver discs and everything. Rule of thumb always go w/what's been working and try to learn from the mistakes of others. That's what I try to do anyway. I do fall short though. I'm human.

no install disc,its on a partition on the drive.

im still studying the posibility of a dual boot.
my first attempt at installing xp on a separate partition actually caused a blue screen crash.

at this point,i have now gotten all my programs to work except for two,nero and alphacam2001. i can just buy ner if i feel like it,but i cantjust buy the latest version of alphacam $$$$$$.

i think the problem may be that the installer is a 16 bit installer which wont work on a 64 bit system,i think. yes,i have tried the compatability mode. even tried to install in the command prompt. i am wondering if i can create a new installer.

i really need alphacam,i use it in my work.

i am going to start downloading all the necessary drivers for the sata mb and drives etc. if i cant dual boot,i will have to install xp alone.

just to frustrate me even more,my old pc crashed in grand fashion the day i got the new pc. looks like the HD AND the mb have fried. i think my power supply shorted out(smells like it) and took the rest with it.

Man when it rains it pours. Did you go str8 to hp to get your system or did you go to 1 of the retailers like best buy, circuit city? it's strange that even though it's on a partition you didn't get any back-up cd-roms or dvd-roms w/their drivers and os? Mine was on a partition also w/only 1 hd.

I'm using my personal build now, but the 1st chance I get I'm scrapping that mce from dell and plugging xp into another tower. I think I can't do a clean install on the prebuilt w/xp even though I use different #'s.

They use to have software to make a set of recovery disks. So that is not longer true? That would really bite if that is true. If the recovery partition is hosed that would mean that you would have to buy the recovery disks from HP.

nops its another plan for microsoft for letting ppl think they will get something cool .... windows 7 will out in late 2009 or early 2010. will only be 64bit, most of the hardware that actually works with vista wont work atall because of native 64bit.

most of the computers will be dualcore or better then what most of ppl have now thus it will run better on those.. [thats what i think microsoft thinks]
