    Modems (Again!)

Thank you doctorhardware for your info, but I have another question. How does one configure a dial-up pc modem for maximum performance? Thanks.

Hi ahgute. What exactly are you trying to get? A new modem for dsl connection? It depends what you're getting and what service you subscribe to when thinking about modems. Just some clarification would be appreciated so as to better help you.Thnx.

Actually he is talking about a dial up modem. It has been to long since I have played with dial up modem set up strings. I used to have a program that would tweak the modem settings. The software company that produced the program is long gone and so is the program.

Hi doc. Good to hear from you. Dial up modem? Jesus I thought you just plug the telephone cable into your jack and let it rip. Only settings I had were the 1 number it started w/and some alternates just in case it was busy. Oh well. We all started somewhere. Oh yeah and make sure you have an unlimited local calling plan. Those calls add up.

I was forced to have dial up connection, for almost 10 years, due to that the co did not have the capacity for DSL, and cable also did not have high speed internet connections. Then when cable had the high speed internet connection, customer and tech support sucked. Had to show the tech how to set up the wireless router/modem when we had cable installed at the house, he had no clue on how to set up the router. I had to show the install tech how to set up all the computers and the router.

Lord these cable companies are something else huh. They don't pay the techs good and they're probably not trained well either. Matter of fact the guy that installed digital cable on 1 of my sets was a sub-contractor and he told me he gets paid way more than the time warner guys. He's paid by the jobs and also commission. So he has to know what he's doing. Otherwise he won't get paid for that job.
