I tried it awhile back. I don't think I could quite get it working. If you have a 32 bit system Sandboxie is sort of a lightweight virtualizer. It doesn't host another OS but intercepts the hd writes. The thing about Sandboxie is it only takes about 5 minutes to find out if it's not going to work. If it crashes when you try to install the driver then that version ain't gonna' work on that PC.

iirc I tried Virtual Box and the MS virtual thingie and the MS one actually went on smoothly. I took it off because instead of running a 1/4 screen guest OS I can just run a sandboxed program. If I download something with the sandboxed program I get a popup "save to real folder of same name?" and I click OK if I want to move it out of the Sandbox. It's very convenient.

      re: MilesAhead

Thanks for your reply. I do use Sandboxie, but was a bit interested in Returnil and some of the alternatives listed on the comments for the Returnil giveaway. I see that there are still places on the comments where one could still get Returnil even though the Giveaway of the Deal offer is over.
I see others us the Try and Decide feature of Acronis True Image. I do have Acronis True Image version 11 but have not tried the Try and Decide feature as of yet.

      thanks snagel

I just took a look at Gizmo's 46 best free downloads and I see a similar app called SafeSpace. Looks pretty good. Although it is .NET 2.0 so it may not be as snappy as Sandboxie. But it's free so I might try it. One thing that looks interesting is it has a list of apps that it automatically runs isolated. How it works with downloads I haven't found out yet. Unfortunately like all these cool things it ain't gonna' work in 64 bit.

Anyway it might be interesting to take a look

hmmmmmmmm I'm trying this SafeSpace now on the guinea pig machine.

So far my impress is it may be the thing for the more casual user. After install you really don't have to do anything. If you run a browser it comes up with a red line around it. Seems like an Install and forget about it type of deal. I have to download something and see how it handles it.

Oh well. So much for that experiment. First time I downloaded I got SafeSpace Agent encountered a problem and cannot continue!! I think it's a mistake to try to do a system prophylactic type utility in .NET anyway. It might be ok for kids because they don't have to click on anything different... if it works that is. Sandboxie is definitely better.

Sandboxie is terrific. I'd strongly recommend it. And it's free.
