hmmmmmm Vista didn't like SP 1 but I did the Custom 7 install. Glad for MozBakup so I don't have to redo everything by hand. So far the only thing I disabled other than UAC is scheduled defrag. I haven't noticed any prolonged HD access. I'll see what happens when I make a Restore Point.
Chewy, you should be interested in this... when I killed the swap file, W7 cut way down on the memory cache!! I was showing %30 memory used with the swap enabled. Without swap it shows 25% used!!

Looks like it's being more conservative with what loads, that could slow you down
So apart from starting quicker and eliminating some functions like quick launch etc.. what else besides the new look is it bringing? How's the security w/ie? Same as before? Which wasn't anything great to begin with? Functions and key controls and so forth are bells and whistles. How's the footprint? How's the overall performance? What exactly can you provide is making 7 stand out?
Whoever's still backing Vista must be doing so out of personal preference. Dell asked me if I wanted to upgrade a while back w/my other pc. I said no, especially w/all those issues. The guy laughed w/me and agreed.
Keep up the good work fellas. I'll keep a eye out on this thread and all the developments and use this as a beta for when and if I decide to install it.

Take the suggestions and follow the directions. The results will speak for themselves.

no need to turn UAC off just make it one step down... turning of uac will disable gadgets. a bug...
Seems like as soon you buy somehing, v. 2 comes out 1.5 times as fast!..!
I wouldn't mind if they'd send me a key for W7 ultimate if I sent 'em my key for Vista Premium Preloaded. Seems only fair to me. I keep hearing Vista is way better with the service pack. If I do the upgrade routine I guess I'll have a chance to find out.. if it goes on without breaking. I hope it takes because reinstalling all my apps is a pita. Still doing it on the P4 machine.
vista is crap without sp1 vista is better with sp1 period. update ur drivers if u cant find sp1 on windows update or get rid of norton.
microsoft issued set of 5 keys of win7 to all... strange, perhaps u can activate win7 till 24th jan after that u may not. or maybe 2.4 million activation....

I don't do gadgets. Too much to mess with. Maybe in 2010.
btw I remembered now why SP1 wouldn't complete. I had the external USB drive attached. I saw a post awhile back that had the same description what happened and the solution was to unplug the USB drive. Anyway, 7 didn't mind. My USB came up working. Just had to change the driver policy back to Performance.

Here's a more representative shot right after startup. Turns out the first screen shot I didn't press the stupid "Set" button to kill the swap. Why you have to press a button to tell it you want to set the setting of the button you just pressed I'll never know.
But it feels snappy. The only thing kinda' jittery is when you close windows they sort of vibrate before imploding. There's probably a delay setting in the registry to fix it.

I don't do IE so I can't tell you any details. I brought it up just long enough to see I had internet access, then put it back in my kill list.
Afa new wrinkles there's a Windows Explorer icon in the Taskbar with "Frequent" folders so you can right click it. It's not MRU so I haven't figured the algorithm yet or if you can manually add entries. My XMon little AutoIt3 compiled gizmo works to monitor explorer. So far it pretty much feels like a leaner Vista. I haven't messed with any services yet. Just killed off defrag in scheduled tasks. I do like the new search since it doesn't seem to take over the whole machine to index like Vista did. I still install Locate32 but the search is good for finding how to shut stuff off that they moved, like clock in Taskbar or whatever.
The other thing is if you're not security paranoid you can share printers and files easily. Now both my machines are in WORKGROUP workgroup. To avoid password crap you just set advanced settings allow network users to modify yadda yadda.
The biggest downer so far is no Sandboxie. I'll have to look through the Services list to see what's running. Out of the box the HD is much quieter than Pre SP1 Vista. One good hint if you do the "Custom" install, if you have small apps that use an .ini file in their own install folder not in Program Files, if you click 'em they come up working. Other stuff you can copy settings from Windows.old.users.yourusername.AppData over to the new folder and the app usually picks them up after you install it again. Got Newzbin with all my customizations back without hassle. Just had to reregister my license key. It shows the WEI as Vista because my HD didn't get any faster.
Those are my impressions so far. Too busy reinstalling apps to experiment too much. The good news is on both machines the network came up working. Had broadband right away and could see the other PC on the Lan. It asks for your name and machine name when you install. I forget if you can change the workgroup name right then or not but network browse seems to work better than Vista so it doesn't come up blind at least for simple 2 PCs on a router with internet setup.
@dr_ml422 the other little gizmo that's better is the Clear Type Text Tuner. It has a few more screens and seems to do a bit better job of producing less fuzzy text. You have to change the focus and compare each box because the focused item always looks sharper than the others. But it works a bit better than before.
Still trying to find how to take the jitter out of closing a window.

builtin gadgets are enough and they finaly fixed them after vista. vista's gadgets are resource hogs, now they are very different theres no sidebar application they are builtin to OS i guess. and starts very fast too.
i find clock, cpu/mem meter and calender very usable weather not bad either.

I'm going to check on that app. you told me about concerning the process killer. It's not XMon AutoIt3 right? This is your creation correct? I know you mentioned it was for purchase. The one we talked about. I have no problem buying anything if it's worth it. And anything that can kill a process and enhance the performance of my computer I think is worth it. Especially if it doesn't interfere w/anything else.
All the other stuff you posted is over my head as usual. At least for now. Takes me a bit to digest this computer business, and especially the gizmos and stuff you post. Definitely MilesAhead.
