How to Play DVD from Hard Drive?

On my Windows PC I want to copy a DVD to the hard drive for permanent DVD storage then play the DVD from the hard drive as needed.

    Without breaking any laws:

1.How should I copy the DVD from DVD RW Disc to the hard drive?
2.What program should I use to play the DVD from the hard drive?

    Thanks, John

The contents of my DVD is a s follows:

    AUDIO_TS Directory is empty

    VIDEO_TS Directory contains the following

    VIDEO_TS.BUP
    VIDEO_TS.IFO
    VIDEO_TS.VOB
    VTS_01_0.BUP
    VTS_01_0.IFO
    VTS_01_0.VOB
    VTS_01_1.VOB
    VTS_01_2.VOB
    VTS_01_3.VOB
    VTS_01_4.VOB
    VTS_01_5.VOB

Sorry but we can't help with copying a DVD even if it means something recorded from the TV because it would involve mentioning software that is against Rule 19.

All I want to ask is, why do you want to watch something from the hard drive and not from the DVD itself?

      Thanks for the information.

These are dancing instruction lesson DVD’s, 20 or so DVD’s with each having 15 to 30 chapters.

If they were on my notebook computer, the notebook is plugged into 52 inch TV, with remote keyboard I can quickly go the Chapter 2 on one DVD then Chapter 5 on another DVD, etc.

It’s not like you go through all Chapters on one DVD in sequence, they are used as a reference to bone up on a particular area of dance.

Can you imagine a book with 20 chapters being referenced one a week, the wear and tear, dog-eared pages, etc?

      Question:

What does one do to protect a $40 DVD X 20 if it gets into an unreadable state?

      Are backups allowed?

      Thanks, John

Well if it's an RW (Not Protected) disk then Imgburn should copy it fine with Read mode.

        Download it HERE
        And Guides are HERE

As far as playback a couple of good freeware players are Media Player Classic or VLC

        Good Luck

          Hi JG,

The Commercial DVD Format is always like that an Empty AUDIO_TS folder and a VIDEO_TS folder which houses your .VOBs (which is the Video data) and the .IFO and .BUP.

          G!

Sorry, but due to conditions imposed on Digital Video Forum, ADMIN had no choice but to add rule 19 to the forum rules to assure the survival of this fine site.
19: Discussions regarding decryption/ripping of DVDs or other types of media is prohibited, as is the discussion of tools that can be used for decryption/ripping (eg. DVD Shrink, FixVTS ...)
Generally authoring, editing, conversion & encoding discussion is fine but nothing that has to do with circumventing any copy protection placed on commercial media by the publisher.

I was under the impression this was not commercial.

Could be but that is a pretty sophisticated file structure for a home brew.

                  Hi burrell,

That's what happens when I don't read the entire Problem ... yep ... it says RW ...

                  THANKS!

In not trying to break any rules, just new to handling multiple DVD’s that are being used as described above.

I know one of them is going to go bad in the future and if the online store is not available/uncooperative or out of business how do you replace a DVD that was legitimately purchased?

What does one do to protect a $40 DVD X 20 DVD’s investment if one gets into an unreadable state?

Are backups allowed? For archival purposes?

                    Thanks, John

                      Hi John,

In some countries yes, some no. But in any case due to the longevity of this forum the forum Administrator has chosen to create Rule 19 that does not allow us to talk about such programs that remove copy protection.

However if your DVD's are not copy protected, as I was under the impression of in a previous post then should be no problem to solve your issue and get your back-ups.

If it is a protected DVD series we just have to follow the rules as created by the forum administrator.

So I guess the question is, Are your DVD's on an RW or are they commercially protected DVD's?

How can you tell if your DVD's on an RW or are they commercially protected DVD's?

Can you tell by looking at the DVD?

Or just start copying until it runs into protection lock?

                        Thanks, John

PS: I said I was new to DVD's

                          Hi JGravesNBS
About the easiest way to tell would be to create a folder on your hard drive of the same name as the volume label of the DVD Then drag and drop the VIDEO_TS Directory and all of it’s contains from the DVD to the new folder on your HD. Then use your favorite DVD player software and open the file “VIDEO_TS.IFO” on the HD copy. If it plays without errors your DVD’s are NOT protected and legal to copy with almost any DVD burning program.
But if the video is all scrambled we can’t discuss it here or how to fix it. Hence rule 19.

                            John,

Please follow my advice in post #4. Download Imgburn and go into read mode. It will let you know if it is copy protected.

To play the DVD from the hard drive, get Media Player Classic. I use it all the time - far better than PowerDVD or WinDVD as those are CPU hogs that are really only useful for Blu-Ray stuff.

Simply open the VIDEO_TS.IFO file in MPC, and it'll play as if you had the physical disc in.

                              Hope that helps!

As for putting it on the drive, these guys are overlooking the obvious. No copy protection == no copy protection. There's a little feature in Windows called the clipboard. Create an empty folder like "My DVD", copy and paste the VIDEO_TS folder. Enjoy!
