Suddenly Can't Download or Save in IE7

    Hi folks,

    Helppppp

I think I might be in trouble. Today, I tried to save a webpage ... which I always can do successfully ... and I could NOT ... and IE7 would crash.

I also can NOT download any type of Files (Zipped or whatever).

I have IE 7.0.6001.18000 which came with my laptop Windows Vista Home
    Prem., 64-Bit .

Q1: Can anyone tell me what the heck is wrong? And how can I fix this problem!?!?

Q2: Do you suppose I have some Weird or Super Smart Virus or Trojan?

BTW, I just ran MalwareBytes Anti-Malware 1.36 with the most updated
definiton in "Quick Scan" mode and it came clean. I also ran SuperAntiSpyware and it came back clean.

BTW, somehow my Avira (version 9.0.0.386) was shut down ... and I could not get it to turn on ... so I uninstalled it and reinstalled it clean ... now it works.

EDIT: Also, I just found out that I can NOT get to Internet Options under Tools in Internet Explorer.

    So, am I basically screwed!?!?

    Thanks,

    G!

Sounds like it is a rootkit. Have you tried to restore to a previous date that it was working.

I tried to restore back to when I installed The latest Adobe Flash Player ... now this started happening after installing the Freeware that I got from GiveAwayofTheDay "Eltima Flash Decompiler Trillix" ... which I think I will uninstall.

How far back should I go ... a day or two?

      Thanks,

      G!

Before you go too crazy run Winpatrol. Then in the menu click Display IE Helpers. See if there's a BHO in there you don't recognize. Once something gets in to "help" IE it can do almost anything. If it had to do with Flash then it probably uses a BHO. Might not be deliberately messing with you. Might just be big bug in the program.

          Hi Miles,

THANKS ... How would I recognize if a BHO does not belong there!?!? I don't even know what belongs there. And each time a program asks to be inserted into my IE7 I choose NO.

Hey ... my laptop is back to Normal ... I can Save and Download again ...

          Q: Do I have a Ghost here!?!?

I am planning to run FULL SCANS and run some RoootKit Removers .... just for the heck of it.

CHEWY ... my man where are YOU!?!?

          @ Doc ... THANKS Dude!

          Thanks,

          G!

You could also run highjackthis and post the log at bleepingcomputer.

              Hi folks,

I give up ... I think my laptop it has a Ghost in it ... I am back in Business again.

I took Doc's suggesgtion and rolled back to my last known Restore Point. Then I ran Full Scans with MBAM and Avira ... and it came back clean as whistle.

I can Save web pages and download stuff.

I will tomorrow when I am in the mood run some Rootkit tools ... just to see what happens and for my experience sinc eI have never done it before.

              Thanks,

              G!

Well at least it is working. Sometimes when you laptop is haunted it will act up at the most inopportune times.

                  Hi folks,

I ran several Rootkit proggies ... but the only ones that worth a dime (welll to novice person like me) were Blacklight & GMER.

@ Chewy ... GMER ran but at the start gave me a ALARM Message saying

"c:\windows\system32\config\system: The system cannot find the file speciifed."

but when I just closed it ... then it ran ... boy this program is Super Fast ... and it came back with No Problem.

Q: Chewy is that Normal or do I need to do something?

                  Thanks,

                  G!
