Flash drive problems? questions? help!

I recently tried to put some MP3's on a new thumb drive, pen drive, jump drive (flash drive) or whatever is commonly referred to for these 2.0 USB devices. I transferred a bunch of songs from a 160 External Hard Drive on the G: Drive. When I was done transferring about half of the MP3's ended up with a garbled up bunch of crap. a bunch of small squares letters symbols etc. None of the songs with this type of crap on it would play. The other approximate half of the songs all turned out excellent. Does anyone have any idea what this squares, symbols etc. is and what causes it.
After seeing the squares and symbols and the MP3 files would not play I could not even delete the garbled up files. I ended up having to re-format the flash drive and start over.

So what are you trying to do - recover the files?

Sometimes the filesystem can get corrupted if you unplug it while the computer is still writing to it (The "Safely remove hardware" thing will prevent that - but as it's seriously annoying it's not needed most of the time, you just run the risk of having that happen.)

If you're looking for a way to recover those mp3s you lost due to formatting, I suggest the program GetDataBack for FAT - I've used it on several flash drives and memory cards and it's great at finding files you think you lost!

I was trying to take files off of my G: Drive external and copy the files to a flash drive. That way I could take some MP3's to work with me.
It hasn't mattered if I left the thing in overnight and then unplugged it. The files were o.k. before unplugging the drive. Afterwards when plugging it back in to either the same computer or a work computer the files were then scrambled. little squares, symbols, numbers, letters etc.
When trying to delete the files that were scrambled it would not allow me to delete the files. I couldn't move them, copy them or anything else. The only way I could get rid of them was to re-format.

Yes, It is, or was connected to a flash drive. How else could I copy them files to the pen drive, flash drive?
