Hi Miles. I keep forgetting you use a network, so you're able to test Lan speeds that way and so forth. I was wondering about the Lan speed through the RJ45 Jack via the ISP, and how you know you're getting 1GB speed? Maybe I'm confused about Lan speed, and it's what you mean, going across a network from 1 PC to another. Common Sense really as 1GB DSL is crazy. No wonder I always complained. Lol...


Otn, if you're PC doesn't call for xtra Ram usage according to the load, then it won't be using all 8GBs of Ram correct? I recall they recommending 3GB or less for 7 32 bit as it won't recognize more than that. That's why I asked if you have your HDD maybe more than 1/2 full, so your *GBs can go to work, and the Quadcore as well if needed. Doesn't the cores also depend on workload to open up as many as needed? I don't think all 4 cores will be working on a small amount of data etc... stored.

I just asked about the virtual feature seeing how you buy now, and don't build anymore. Guess you can get something pretty decent from stock now, although I don't think as custom as one wants, unless you ask for a fee if possible.

I really didn't want to move on from XP, as I only started learning since joining here ttytt, but I let go, and went straight to 7 64. Only inserting what I know is compatible and what I need.

Played my 1st game today on the new build. I had fun, and must say I'll be playing a lot more. Never really played any Games since the Atari days w/the gun you shoot at your tube etc... Lol... Learning to relax more, and also take more risks. Really was too cautious to start anything new, and mess up the PC. Got to tell you, my build handled the Game well, and the picture was great on my Dell Monitor which I'm using until my better one gets back from a repair.

Yeah, the Lan speeds are just machine to machine. Another poster here recommended a GB switch instead of buying an expensive router. The 100 Mb/sec router can still handle all my ISP will give me.

My AMD won't do the virtualization thing. At least that MS download that tells you if it will work, said it won't. No big deal to me since I already have XP Pro on a partition on a machine.

afa the quad cores go, where they really come in is in video encoding. If I use FAVC or DVD-RB Pro it launches a copy of HC Enc for each core. All 4 cores are maxed out at 100% nearly 100% of the time during the video encoding portion of the job. The machine with the 8 GB ram is running Vista64 SP1. That's the quad core. The W7 machine is dual core AMD. The Vista64 machine runs nice and smooth and stable. I see no reason to put W7 on it. The other machine had Vista before SP1. It won't take the service pack and lots of headaches so it was worth it to put W7 on.

btw the BlacX docking station turns out to be the perfect thing for WD HDTV player for USB. A lot of owners of the player had as their main if not only gripe, that when they power down the WD player, the external drive doesn't spin down. The BlacX is perfect for that. When I'm done watching I power down the WD, then just push the power button on the BlacX. No need to pull wires to power down for the night.

I got you now. I knew the quad cores would be using something heavy to come into play. I think I have that NetGear Switch you're talking about. It has 5 ports., and it's the 10/100/1000MBs 1. So I guess that's for the Lan between my PCs to correct?

Yes the BlackX Docking Station is ttytt the best piece of hardware I've bought. I have 2 myself. Both are USb ready, and 1 has the E-Sata option as well. I don't know yet if I've seen any dramatic speed increase w/the E-Sata port. I do know both ports zip though. Again this might better be seen between 2 PCs than just from the computer to the Docking Station or vice versa.

I'm keeping in mind that WD Player. It has good reviews since it came out really.

So your router you got for security purposes as well as a hub for your 2 PCS? My modem comes w/a built in router. It was furnished by Verizon. I will prolly have to get 1 when I get my LT.

What Memory maker you have in your machines? I presume you put the xtra sticks in yourself. I put 2 sticks of 2GB DDR3 OCZ Gaming Memory in my new build. I had to call OCZ because of that Mem Dump issue I posted about. Guy gave me the correct voltage to manually put in the Bios. Idk if it's hindering any more speed, but everything's fine, and the heating issue I thought I was having w/my BFG GPU was not a issue after all. After gaming for about 20 mins. it barely rose a couple of degrees. Granted maybe it wasn't the most intensive Game out there, but I'm happy. Besides it has a Life Time Warranty.

My 1st build has a ASUS DDR3 9500GT in it. I haven't tried that for gaming yet. I figure I leave that 1 in just in case some one wants to buy it. It has only 3 year warranty. At this pace though looks like I'll be keeping it, for now anyway.

BTW, it doesn't matter like you said, but if your Bios has the Virtualization feature it will do it. That's where you enable it before dl'ng MS's software for it. It's pretty cool, and MS gives you XP Pro as well as the Virtual OS. Funny though. when I 1st put it in to see it work, I figure I'd do a clone of the HDD w/True Image. Guess what? It will only clone 1 of the OS's. I found that interesting. Now I don't remember if I was using the older version that was XP compatible, and in the Virtual OS though. I took it out anyway, and strictly 7 64 now.

No, I'm lazy. The quad core is the PC in my specs in sig. It came just like it is. I haven't opened the box since I bought it. I added the Gb network card to the dual core since it only had 100 Mb/sec chip. I bought the router when I first got broadband. I used it as an Instant Lan until it became too slow. Now I just plug the Gb switch into the router and both machines can access the Internet that way.

So far my only gripe with the WD player is the subtitle handling. It seems like it can access selectable subs in DVD folders so I don't know why it shouldn't be able to handle divx subtitles. They probably fixed that in the new one. Other than that it's playing great.

The only other thing I would add is I think someone with some ergonomic training should start designing remotes. Most of them fit in your hand fine until you lift up your thumb to press a button. Then esp. if the button is near the bottom of the remote, it almost wants to fall out of your hand. Ridiculous to hold a remote with 2 hands when the thing is only about 3" long. The buttons should probably be on the underside if the thing so you could press them with 4 fingers. They would have to group the buttons per finger so you could tell by feel which button you are pressing. Or something. Almost anything would be an improvement on the current form factor.

Yes that Remote crippling of the fingers, hand is old, and should already been addressed like you mentioned. Didn't you ever wonder also how it came to be that Plasma, and LCD TVS came out before the newest LCD models? LCD technology has been around for decades. They must of made a pact when one of the big boys was going to come out w/it, and everyone else already had 100s, and 1000s of Plasmas, and LCDS in a warehouse ready to go.

I see you're using Home Premium x64 7 in your sig. Is your Vista X64 Pro or Home as well? I ask only for a quick feedback on any real differences between the 2 except for the obvious as posted in the charts in MS site etc... I might be looking to change from Home x64 7 to Pro, and I just started gaming, so a lil insight would do good. By differences I mean things like different browser configurations regarding Security Certificates etc... whether in FF or IE 8. Anything you might have experienced other than Pro's xtra 2 or 3 features. Thnx.

I don't have Vista Pro. Just the x64 Home Premium that came pre-installed. On my 32 bit machine I'm running one of the W7 betas until it dies.

btw-I just did the firmware update on the WD player. It should support more subtitle types now. Although it still won't display embedded .divx subs. If stand-alone dvd .divx players can do it I don't get why this player can't. But at least this should cut down on subtitle conversions. I'm going to try out some of the other subtitle types today(original firmware only did .srt period.)

Also the update changed the menu making a line for each item with the title on it. The original firmware you had to put the focus on a folder or file before you could read the name of it.

The update was pretty easy. They gave very clear instructions. The only difficulty is finding the page on WD with all the models to get the right firmware. The install just uses a USB key drive and it very easy.

Supposedly you must have a USB key drive to do it. An external USB won't work. Must be something to do with hot plugging or whatever.
