I have a slow internet connection through the phone line. I can live with it, but someone said that living near a large lake will slow the connection. Is this true? And if so, why?

Are we talking 28.8 here or some ADSL phone line slow? I've never heard about the lake effect. It's a new one on me.
edit: if you are talking ADSL then I did here some stuff about distance to the phone substation having an effect on the quality of the line. If there's a large lake then maybe it implies the distance is on the outer edge of feasibility? Just a guess. -

Hmmmmm, I've used semaphores in programming, but not the kind like the guy uses on the Aircraft Carrier to guide the planes in.
Could be something simpler, like the technician who is supposed to maintain the system is fishing most of the time?Comment

You guys are too funny! But I think I will try the tin foil hat. Should keep the aliens out too ...
I know it sounds more ridiculous than the answers you guys have given me, but I had to ask. A few different people around here have said the same thing. Take a look at my speed test, I'm bawling my eyes out here ...
Edit: Do you think it might be a very old router? Must be 7 or 8 years old.Comment

That speed is definantly unacceptable - I couldn't live with that. Did you contact tech support? What do they have to say about it? Seems they would send a tech out to review the situation.
Disconnect the router, plug straight into the pc...see if speed improves. Although you did mention that others are having the same problem, so it would seem that it is a "system wide" problem, not just with your pc.Comment

It's freakin' Qwest out here. Didn't know that there version of high speed is the equivalent of dial up.
That seemed to work katz, does it mean I need a new router?Comment
