    DSL/Internet connecting issue?

My Sister has a Verizon DSL line and AOL 9 on her desktop. XP SP-3..
you know, the full installed version from a disk..
[ she likes aol's mail interface better/what can I say]..

any way, she logs on to aol everyday which runs fine.
problem?[maybe] is she said if she chooses to just click on Internet Explorer from the taskbar skipping using aol at all she would go right onto her Yahoo welcome page.
    all normal so far..

Now when she does this to get to Yahoo there is a delay as it says,"connecting" 1st then opens up the welcome page.[ a big 10 seconds have passed since IE clicked on]

I don't really see this as a problem but she says since she has DSL it should always be connected like it was before..at least to the Internet..
She doesn't know enough to mess with any settings so nothing was changed..
Is this a security feature or a connection config that was changed somehow..
don't want to fix if not broken...

Take a look at the DSL modem. There should be a light that tells you if you have modem lock. If it keeps dropping modem lock that's an issue. If not then it may be some issue to do with logging on or something.

How about if she just IEs to an ordinary web page like google? Does it access right away?

I tried DSL awhile back and the connection was off more than on. Hopefully they improved it by now.

we just made google homepage as a desktop icon.
there is a second maybe that I see "connecting" and it comes up lot quicker than Yahoo but that just maybe due to more Yahoo home page content to load.

no, don't have any modem lock display anywhere on modem.
I think I remember her yahoo home page being right there when you clicked IE from the desktop a while back.
little stumped here about this although I don't think it;s
        a problem...
would like to know why just for curious now..

I use both my Yahoo page and also AOL page and both load equally fast, there is no lag. I have AT@T here. What DSL modem does your sister have. I am also very close to the phone co central office. It is about 2 blocks from my place. I am using a netgear wireless router/modem. Have you looked at the modems connection error page and see if there is any problems with the DSL connection.

Also on the netgear that I have is shows, looks exclamation point and a side ways c at the bottom for the DSL connection. It is always a solid green and never flashes. I had a Motorola DSL modem and I do not remember what the DSL connection icon looked like but there has to be one on the modem.

she has a Westel 6100 DSL modem for desktop.
            [no wireless].

Also About half mile from verizon switching station so,,,
            that's all good..
no yellow exlamation point or similar.

no errors showing on modem connection.

wondering now if this is an AOL thing..
does have the full monty when it comes to aol here.
not just the basic Aol internet version.

I see that it is related to IE7 issue, I am using IE8 and have not seen that issue here like that. Time to dump IE7 and maybe use Firefox.

                  btw:
I remember when you used to go into add/remove programs and clicked on IE to remove, there was a "repair" option but don't see it there anymore..

For some reason that has been removed by MS, don't know why. Maybe to force an upgrade to IE8? I know that I was getting pop ups from yahoo to upgrade to IE8 or loose some functionality and or features.
