I currently have Windows Vista 32-bit. Because of a program that I need for work, I must upgrade to a 64-bit windows. Would I be better off going with Vista 64-bit or Windows 7 64-bit?

You'll have to do a full reinstall of Windows anyway (you have to whenever you go from 32-bit to 64-bit), so I would definitely choose Windows 7. -
Are you sure the work program works equally well in both? If it's a public program I'd search support forums and see if it's difficult to install/maintain in one or the other. Also I'd look at support sites for both Windows Seven and Vista and see if there are a lot of problems with PCs with hardware that sounds a lot like yours.
There are so many permutations they can't test them all. By the time they did everyone would be using Windows Ten. All other things being equal I'd go with W7 esp. if it's a higher end version. If it's Premium then there's probably not that much difference. I'm still looking for those "Vista Bargain Bins" all the PC writers talk about where you can get Vista Ultimate for $5. Maybe it's only on MS Redmond Campus or something.
All I can say from personal experience is I'm using Vista Home Premium 64 bit SP1 and it's working fine. I tried doing a Windows 7 64 bit "custom install" which worked with every other Windows I've tried, and the results were bad enough I took it off.
With any OS check your hardware for known problems is #1 on the list though.Last edited by MilesAhead; 13 May 2010, 03:14 AM.Comment
