I have a friend at work who is having problems with a desktop model HP. Everytime he tries to boot up it goes directly to a blue screen. He has tried booting from the safe mode and it still goes back directly to the blue screen. He has tried to go to F11 to use the HP restore function and it still goes back to the blue screen. He is asking for my help at this time and I have very little background in this as I have only done a few things for myself at this time. Your help would be appreciated very much at this time. snagel

A screen cap of the blue screen would help, since it should display some sort of error code that allows for further diagnostic.
If I had to make a blind guess, a hard disk issue or RAM issue might be in play here. It's always good to rule out memory problems by running memtest (http://www.memtest.org/) first. -

I can't get it to do anything at all past the blue screen. I have tried F8 start normally, start from the last know good configuration and HP F11 restore. All attempts lead straight back to the blue screen with the same exact message.
Can't access internet to attempt memtest. Blue screen is all I can get.Comment

This indicates a hard-drive problem. How severe it is, it's hard to tell, but I would really try and salvage as much data as possible from the drive before attempting anything else.
This post seems to provide good tips on how to salvage data, by creating a Linux live CD, and then copying everything you can to an external/USB drive:
Then try these tips on how to fix the boot problem, although in a lot of cases, the data on the drives may already be gone, and the only thing you can do is to buy a new hard-drive and start over:
