Desktop PC Shuts Down immediately when power button is pressed

Hi All- I have just recently experienced the following: I was in the process of powering up my PC. It went through the motions (Fans kick on, Hard Dr light blinking, Windows XP logo started to load, when all of a sudden it just shut its self off. I tried powering up again and noticed that when I pressed the power button, the Power Supply Unit's green light would go off & the CPU's fan would get louder; but nothing else would happen. I then would have to hold down the power button to get the PC to shut down. Has anyone else experienced this problem?

This sounds like a motherboard problem to me as I have experienced this in the past.

Thanks. I have taken a look & the Motherboard has 7 bad caps. Would it be worth the while to replace caps or is it time for a new desktop? What did you do?

You could try and source a replacement motherboard - they won't be that easy to find, and being a pre-built PC, I don't know if there might be any other issues with fitting in a different motherboard. So, fixing it yourself may be the only option, if you don't intend to upgrade.

But for very little money, you can buy a brand new system that should easily outperform your current one.
