Sony Drops DVD for Blu-ray Disc

Sony will no longer use the standard DVD format in its video recorders, instead moving to Blu-ray Disc for all future models in Japan.

While this probably only affects Japanese hardware, I don't really like this move at all. DVDs still have their place, and the fact that it is still the most compatible format around, it's still needed when you burn your own discs and want to share with family or friends.

I think Sony is making a huge strategic mistake.
Reminds me of betamax misstep of 25 years ago. Some folks just dont learn.
The good news is that Sony seems to be loosing this battle to HD.
Plus, you an still buy other recorders.

It's all one giant con to force people to re-buy every DVD they have ever bought. Personally, I like DVD's the way they are, if people want better quality let them pay extra, but make it a choice, don't force it on them.

I would never re-buy any DVDs I already have, but at the same time, I'm also buying the HD DVD version of new releases instead of the DVD version if the price is right. DVDs + the upscaling feature on HD DVD/Blu-ray players gives you almost a whole different experience when watching movies on large HD screens, and I'm looking forward to the day that I buy a 1080p screen and a HD DVD/Blu-ray player with DVD upscaling so I can watch all my DVDs again.
