yeah it does so if I get a second ethernet box do I need a router or can the net be used on the pc and on the ps3 at the same time?

If you already have a cable/ADSL modem, than you can simply add a router to that setup to share your Internet with other devices (and also to share files amongst your devices). It all depends on where your modem is, and what you can do with the cables, so perhaps getting a wireless router is the best way to go forward. The PS3 only supports the 802.11g standard for 54 Mbps connections, although wireless routers these days will support much faster protocols (with backwards compatibility support for older standards like 11g).

It might all seem quite complicated at first (a new post in General Computing might be needs), but it's a set and forget type of deal and having your PS3 networked will open up lots of other uses for it (Internet browsing, Folding@Home, PlayStation Network, online gaming, media streaming ...)
