Sony BMG Sued for Software Piracy - Assets Seized

Sony BMG, a company known for enforcing its intellectual property rights, is now facing the other end of an Intellectual Property related lawsuit. A report (French) says the complaining company, PointDev, seized some of Sonys assets which revealed that the pirated software appeared on four of their servers.

This is the bit I like best - I do hope DADC (and its hired legal guns) are reading this:

PointDev, a small software company, mandated a bailiff to raid one of Sony BMGs owned building in January this year. The raid revealed that four of the Sony BMGs owned servers contained the pirated software.

This reminds me of the time MediaDefender was caught using illegal means to 'defend' copyrighted files.

Sony made a decision a long time ago, at their closed board meetings either to use stolen software on their servers or not to use stolen software.

A decision was make for the best cost effective method, and at that time Sony felt stolen is the cheapest method. Factors in making the decision were if we get caught what would be the total dollar cost after all the fines and legal fees.

Sony is not stupid, they knew what they were doing they just did not know if they would get caught or not. Sony got caught and for them it still is the cheapest method using stolen software on their servers.
