Top 20:

Another week, and we're getting really close to Black Friday now. Close, but not yet there, which means we still have new releases (Black Friday week usually is quiet in terms of new releases).

The Equalizer 3 was the most popular title and new release for the week, on the combined Blu-ray/4K sales chart (it was second on the 4K only sales chart). The Equalizer 3-Movie Collection also ranked, in 15th (the 4K edition failed to make the 4K top 20).

Sound of Freedom (4K, 8K trailer) was third (no 4K version was made available), and then it was all the way down to 9th for the next new release, The Nun II (4K, 8K trailer). "The Nun II" failed to make the 4K top 20 though, which was filled with older releases due to the start of the Black Friday sales.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: As mentioned earlier, "The Equalizer 3" (and the 3-movie pack) and "The Nun II" both had 4K editions, "Sound of Freedom" did not. 9 titles out of this week's top 10 had UHD editions.

Blu-ray, Ultra HD Blu-ray Sales Share:

The BD sales share is the percentage of disc packages sold for that contained the titles's Blu-ray edition (including combos, and Ultra HD editions) for a particular title. So a BD sales share of 60% indicates that 60% of disc packages sold for this particular film contained the Blu-ray edition for this film, and so anything over 50% means that the Blu-ray version of the film was more popular than the DVD version.

"The Equalizer 3" managed a BD sales share of 59%, with "The Equalizer 3-Movie Collection" getting 58%. "The Nun II" got 53%, while "Sound of Freedom" got 50%.

On 4K, "The Equalizer 3" got a 4K sales share of 18%, versus 7% for "The Nun II".

Blu-ray vs DVD: 43.44% vs 56.56%

Blu-ray: $16.03 million
DVD: $20.87 million

Blu-ray sales increased by $0.32m (up 2.0%), with unit sales down 7.2%.

DVD sales decreased by $5.78m (down 27.7%), with unit sales down 43.7%.

This meant $5.46 million less in combined revenue for the week.

Blu-ray's market share increased from 43.44% to 52.00%

Top 20:

It's Black Friday week and another marker that we can use to show how much Blu-ray (and DVD) sales have declined. Except, our pre-determined narrative was incorrect* - Blu-ray sales rose!

That's right, Black Friday 2023 recorded a 17.6% rise, which wasn't what we were expecting. Could this be the beginning of a recovery for Blu-ray (and 4K), we're not sure, but perhaps we have reached the floor for 4K/Blu-ray sales, which is good news (and means physical media will probably stick around, if hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue can be still had from a "dying" format).

* Or maybe we were right after all.

That's because, unlike most Black Friday sales week where new releases are non-existent, Universal chose this week to release perhaps the most anticipated 4K/Blu-ray release of the year, Oppenheimer (4K trailer). There are widespread reports of discs selling out, so had Universal bothered to stock stores with enough copies, the Blu-ray revenue stats may have been even better.

We finally have the disc version of Barbenheimer, with "Oppenheimer" in first place (on both the combined 4K/Blu-ray chart and the 4K only chart) selling 1.7 times as many copies as the second-placed "Barbie".

Not only that, we have other new releases in the top 10. The Expendables 4 (or "Expend4bles" for those who want a more interesting title - 4K trailer) was 6th (7th on the 4K chart), and Saw X (4K trailer) was 10th (11th on the 4K chart).

There were a couple of other new releases that were only in the 4K only chart, as they did not rank high enough on the combined chart. The 30th-anniversary 4K edition of The Fugitive was 12th on the 4K chart and a couple of different packages of the 4K version of Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero was 17th.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: All of this week's previously mentioned new releases had 4K editions or were 4K only releases. Every single title out of this week's top 10 had UHD editions!

"Oppenheimer" managed a BD sales share of 74%, beating the 70% earned by "Saw X" and the 61% earned by "The Expendables 4".

On 4K, "Oppenheimer" managed an impressive 4K sales share of 36.27%, "Saw X" managed 25%, and "The Expendables 4" got 23%.

Blu-ray vs DVD: 50.20% vs 49.80%;

Blu-ray: $20.33 million
DVD: $20.17 million

Blu-ray sales increased by $3.58m (up 17.6%), with unit sales up 2.9%.

DVD sales decreased by $2.34m (down 11.6%), with unit sales down 20.2%.

This meant $1.24 million more in combined revenue for the week.

Blu-ray's market share increased from 50.20% to 57.28%

Top 20:

Cyber Monday is here. Blu-ray sales remained above $20 million, although unlike last week, it was a very quiet one for new releases.

The best-selling new release was the 4K SteelBook edition of WandaVision, which was 4th on the combined 4K and Blu-ray chart (second on the 4K only chart).

A Haunting in Venice was the only other new release in the combined top 20, in 11th (it wasn't made available on 4K).

The Naked Gun made the 4K chart, but not the combined top 20, and it was 13th.

Comparing this Cyber Monday with the last, Blu-ray revenue rose 7.7%, although at least a large chunk of this, if not all of it, is due to the popularity of this and last week's number one, Oppenheimer.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: All of this week's previously mentioned new releases had 4K editions or were 4K only releases. Again, every single title out of this week's top 10 had UHD editions!

This meant $2.38 million less in combined revenue for the week.

Blu-ray's market share increased from 46.91% to 53.55%

Top 20:

Black Friday and Cyber Monday are over, but Blu-ray sales remained above $20 million as a couple of big releases helped to keep revenue up.

New release Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny was the most popular title for the week, selling more copies than "Oppenheimer". While it was top of the combined Blu-ray and 4K chart, it was second on the 4K only chart.

Titanic arrived on 4K for the first time and was third on both the combined and 4K only charts.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds - Season Two was 6th (8th on the 4K chart). Babylon 5: The Complete Series was 8th (it wasn't available on 4K).

The 4K release of Young Guns was 10th (4th on the 4K chart). Another 4K release, Point Break, was 15th (5th on the 4K chart).

There were more new releases in the 4K only top 20, ones that didn't make the combined top 20. The Monster Squad was 17th, The Color Purple was 19th, and Silver Bullet was 20th.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: All of this week's releases had 4K editions or were 4K only releases, except for "Babylon 5: The Complete Series". 9 titles out of this week's top 10 had UHD editions.

Top 20:

The holiday shopping period is heating up as sales near yearly highs. This meant Blu-ray revenue of above $20 million, which is better than the yearly average, but way down from the heyday of Blu-ray, where sales topped $100 million frequently.

We did have quite a few new releases as well, although none of them sold enough to be this week's top-seller. Five Nights at Freddy’s (4K trailer) was the best-selling new release, coming second on the combined Blu-ray and 4K chart, and 7th on the 4K chart.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem (4K trailer) was third, on both charts, while The Mandalorian: The Complete First Season (4K trailer) was 4th (2nd on the 4K chart). The Mandalorian: The Complete Second Season was also released this week on 4K and Blu-ray SteelBooks, and it was 6th (4th on the 4K chart).

The Creator (check out our spoiler-free review - 4K, 8K trailer) was 8th (5th on the 4K chart), and it was the last new release in the top 10.

Outside of the top 10, Paw Patrol: The Mighty Movie (4K trailer) was 13th (not available on 4K), Weird: The Al Yankovic Story was 15th (14th on the 4K chart), and the 4K release of Clue was the last new release in the top 20, in 19th (8th on the 4K chart).

There were a few more new releases in the 4K top 20 that weren't in the combined top 20. The Criterion Collection release of Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio on 4K was 11th on the 4K chart (it was also released on Blu-ray and DVD). The 4K release of The Wailing was 16th on the 4K chart.

This week's 4K Ultra HD report: Only "Paw Patrol: The Mighty Movie" wasn't made available on 4K, out of the aforementioned new releases. Again, every single title out of this week's top 10 had UHD editions!

Of all of this week's new releases, "Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio" actually had the best BD sales share, with 83.93%. "The Creator" was the next best, with 68.63%.

"Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem" managed 66.48%, while "Five Nights at Freddy’s" got 63.38%.

"Weird: The Al Yankovic Story" got 58.75%.

On 4K, "Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio" managed a 4K sales share of 62.14%. "The Mandalorian: The Complete Second Season" got 52.58%, with "The Mandalorian: The Complete First Season" getting a 4K sales share of 50.35%.

"The Creator" managed a respectable 35.69%, while "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem" wasn't too far behind with a 4K sales share of 31.67%.

"Weird: The Al Yankovic Story" managed 24.89%.

The holiday shopping period peaks in the week before Christmas, but this is also when new releases become pretty light. Blu-ray revenue still hovered above $20 million, nowhere near the $100 million plus Blu-ray results recorded during Blu-ray's peak (in 2015 and 2016, for example).

For new releases, The Exorcist: Believer (4K trailer) was the sole new release in the top 10, coming in at 6th on the combined 4K and Blu-ray chart (also 6th on the 4K only chart).

The only new release in the top 20 was the new edition of the original Avatar (in a Collector's Edition, 3D Remasters and Best Buy Exclusive SteelBook versions).

There were more new releases on the 4K only chart (that didn't make the combined 4K and Blu-ray top 20). The Shout Factory Collector's Edition of JFK was 3rd. A new Collector's Edition of Avatar: The Way of Water was 4th.

Another Shout Factory release, The Dead Zone was 18th and Arrow Video Limited Edition release on Blu-ray and 4K for The Warriors rounded off the new release list in 19th.

This week's 4K Ultra HD report: All of the above listed new releases were available on 4K or were 4K exclusives. Again, every single title out of this week's top 10 had UHD editions!

"Avatar" did have a new 3D edition, and the 3D sales share was 3.68% - I guess it's good for 3D enthusiasts that they're still doing 3D releases, even if it doesn't really translate to sales.

This meant $6.86 million less in combined revenue for the week.

Top 20:

The last full week of the year is usually a quiet one, what with Christmas stuck in the middle of it. As a result, Blu-ray sales dropped back down from recent levels. As is the tradition for this time of the year, new releases are light on the ground, or in the case for this week, non-existent in the top 20.

Comparing this week to the same week last year, Blu-ray sales were down 11% and DVD revenue was down 15.2%, so not a Merry Christmas for the physical media business.

The stats for the week ending December 31, 2022 are as follows. Some small adjustments to the data posted last year (based on more recent updates) have been made and are shown below.

Blu-ray vs DVD: 45.42% vs 54.58%

Blu-ray: $12.49 million
DVD: $15.01 million

Blu-ray sales decreased by $1.37m (down 11.0%), with unit sales down 15.8%.

DVD sales decreased by $2.28m (down 15.2%), with unit sales down 19.6%.

This meant $3.65 million less in combined revenue for the week.

Blu-ray's market share increased from 45.42% to 46.62%

Welcome back to the first, and updated, edition of this feature for 2024. Media Play News has (for now) discontinued reporting weekly revenue figures, and so this feature will now focus on market share and the weekly new releases. If/when revenue reporting continues again, we will update this post with the new information.

The first week of a new year is usually a quiet one for new releases, and 2024 didn't prove to be any different. The only new release in any of the top 20 charts was The Holdovers, coming in at 5th place.

This week's 4K Ultra HD report: "The Holdovers" was only available on Blu-ray and DVD, not 4K UHD. 9 titles out of this week's top 10 had UHD editions.

"The Holdovers" had a BD sales share of 51.82%.

Top 20:

Another quiet week, in which there was only one new release in the combined Blu-ray and 4K top 20, and two further new releases in the 4K top 20. All of them were 4K only releases.

The 4K release of Oldboy managed to get into the combined top 20 in 18th (it was 5th on the 4K chart). Varsity Blues was 9th on the 4K chart, while Blood Simple was 18th.

This week's 4K Ultra HD report: As mentioned earlier, all three new releases were 4K only releases. Again, every single title out of this week's top 10 had UHD editions!

Top 20:

Another typically quiet January week, but better than the previous week in that there were four new releases in the combined Blu-ray and 4K top 20 and the 4K only top 20.

Trolls Band Together (4K trailer download) was the most popular of the new releases and the overall top-seller for the week. It came third ont he 4K only chart.

Journey to Bethlehem (4K trailer download) was the next new release on the charts, coming in at 8th (not available on 4K).

The 4K SteelBook release of The Raid: Redemption ranked 11th on the combined chart and 4th on the 4K chart. The Criterion edition of Lone Star was 16th on the 4K chart.

This week's 4K Ultra HD report: As mentioned earlier, "Journey to Bethlehem" wasn't made available on 4K. 9 titles out of this week's top 10 had UHD editions.

Another very quiet week in which Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths - Part One was the sole new release in the Blu-ray and 4K/Blu-ray combined top 20 - it was third on both the combined chart and 4K only chart. There was one more release in the all-physical-media top 20, Special Ops: Lioness - Part One, which was 17th on the all-physical-media chart.

This week's 4K Ultra HD report: "Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths - Part One" was made available on 4K SteelBook, "Special Ops: Lioness - Part One" was Blu-ray and DVD only. Every single title out of this week's top 10 had UHD editions!

On 4K, "Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths - Part One" managed a 4K sales share of 22.63%.

Top 20:

Thanksgiving was the best-selling new release and overall best-seller for the week on the combined Blu-ray and 4K chart (it wasn't made available on 4K).

Silent Night was the next best-seller, in third place (again, not available on 4K), and the Criterion release of Trainspotting was the last new release in the top 20, in 9th (it was second on the 4K chart).

There were a couple of more new releases in the 4K only chart.

Conan the Barbarian was 8th on the 4K chart. Kindergarten Cop was 11th on the same chart.

This week's 4K Ultra HD report: "Trainspotting" and "Conan the Barbarian", along with the 4K exclusive "Kindergarten Cop", were all available on 4K. 9 titles out of this week's top 10 had UHD editions.

Top 20:

A total contrast to the previous week, in which we have plenty of new releases in both the combined Blu-ray/4K top 20 and the 4K only top 20.

The top-seller for the week on the combined chart was The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes (download 4K trailer), selling just enough copies to beat the second-placed The Marvels (download 4K trailer). It was just the reverse on the 4K only chart, with "The Marvels" on top.

Priscilla was 5th (no 4K edition was made available), while Planet Earth III was 7th (4th on the 4K chart).

The 40th anniversary 4K release of Footloose was 8th (5th on the 4K chart).

And finally on the combined chart, Hypnotic (download 4K trailer) was 14th.

There were a couple of other new entries into the top 20 on the 4K chart. The Amazon-exclusive Universal Classic Monsters Limited Edition Collection was 7th on the 4K chart, while another classics box set, the Columbia Classics 4K Ultra HD Collection Vol. 4 was 8th.

The 4K edition of Willy’s Wonderland, including the SteelBook edition, was 10th.

This week's 4K Ultra HD report: Only "Priscilla" wasn't made available on 4K or wasn't a 4K exclusive. 9 titles out of this week's top 10 had UHD editions.

"Planet Earth III" (a title which I would have expected it to be Blu-ray exclusive) was made available on DVD, and so it had a BD sales share - the highest of the week at 84.56%.

"The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes" got 70.77%, just ahead of "The Marvels" at 68.99%. "Hypnotic" got 25%.

On 4K, "The Marvels" led with a 4K sales share of 36.63%, "The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes" with 22.67%.

We are back to it being a quiet week on the combined Blu-ray and 4K charts, but at least there were a few 4K exclusives.

The best-selling new release was actually the 4K release of Darkman, 6th on the combined chart and 4th on the 4K only chart.

The 4K Limited Edition SteelBook edition of Paprika was 8th (6th on the 4K chart).

With a new Beverly Hills Cop movie coming, you can buy the first three movies in this 4K re-release box set. Beverly Hills Cop 3-Movie Collection was 15th on the combined chart, and 7th on the 4K chart.

The Criterion Collection edition of The Heroic Trio/Executioners, available on 4K and Blu-ray, was 17th (11th on the 4K chart).

And finally on the combined chart, Leviathan was 19th (9th on the 4K chart).

A couple of more releases on the 4K-only chart. Beverly Hills Cop 3 was 10th and The Last Castle was 16th.
