Sony: 'Piracy Has Fueled PSP Sales'

In an acknowledgment of conventional-gamer-wisdom about the Sony PSP, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe president David Reeves acknowledged that PSP piracy has boosted hardware sales, although he is no way endorsing the homebrew piracy scene.

Oops, let's stop pirating now... we wouldn't want someone actually making money off it now would we?

So why exactly are they trying to stop what's making them money? I think this whole DMCA thing is crap, and the only thing it's hurting is the reputation of the RIAA and MPAA...

The Nintendo DS with the various memory card things (like the M3 DS Real) is the same ... they make less in software, but make that up in hardware sales, which then helps their "ecosystem" (their range of related devices that can all connect to each other and convince users to buy into the "brand").

The PC's rise was due to piracy. The PlayStation's rise was also due to piracy (compared to the harder to pirate Nintendo consoles). I'm pretty sure the reason why the Xbox 360 has sold better than expected, and why the PS3 is not selling as well as it should, is also due to piracy. DVDs, of course, only became really popular when copy protection and region coding was broken. So there is a trend here, and while a lot of money has been "lost" to piracy, a lot of money has been earned because of it as well.

Which is why I think ultimately no one will be able to do anything about it. Sure, the RIAA can sue random college kids for a few thousand dollars, but they will never, and I mean NEVER, be able to get every single person who has pirated something.

And I'm sure if Nintendo actually started making halfway decent games, more people would buy them. The reason I hate buying DS games is that you pay $35 for a few-hour gameplay and then it's boring as heck. Why bother in the first place? At least Blockbuster and similar places do game rentals... Plus, the DS hardware IS pretty nice, the homebrew software available for said flash carts is definately better than the official stuff (IRC on a DS, anyone?)

If it were up to me I'd just have all the video games/movies released with no copy protection at all, and then sell affordable burnable discs. That way they'd make money either way
