Blu-ray is struggling to catch on in Australia and around the world and is in danger of being skipped over by consumers, but the format's proponents believe this year's Christmas shopping rush will be a major tipping point.

Despite Australians' love affair with big screen high-definition TV sets, people are not making the most of them by pairing the TV sets with HD-capable Blu-ray players, largely choosing to stick with standard definition DVD.

There is also now the problem of the weak Australian dollar, which rules out importing previously cheap Blu-ray movies from the US/UK, so it looks like I will end my Blu-ray buying for the time being until local prices drop. There's a thread about it here:

Yeah - we went from 97 US cents to 65 almost overnight. Good if you're an exporter though.

Still, stock purcahsed when the A$ was high should still be at "bargain" prices. The ACCC won't allow price gouging.

Not in the US, unless there is deep discounts. The Christmas shopping season is going to be very bad for the retailers. The US stock market is now below 8000. The US stock market is tanking. One good thing the gas prices are falling, in my area I am paying 3.29 a gallon now.
