Iron Man Blu-ray Sales Soaring at Retailers

Adams Media Research is reporting Iron Man Blu-ray sales are coming in at approximately 20% of all total home video sales. At some retailers like DeepDiscount.com, the Blu-ray share for Iron Man reaches as high as 50%.

20% (compared to DVD) would set a record, and Iron Man is the perfect title for Blu-ray as it is perfectly aimed at the PS3 demographic. The Nielsen VideoScan figures due out around Saturday should provide more concrete information.

According to this article (quoting Home Media Magazine), Iron man sold 7.2m on DVD and 500,000 on Blu-ray. That makes the Blu-ray sales percentage 6.94%, well within the range of recent Nielsen VideoScan sales ratios (in fact, it's a little lower). Iron Man is the best selling Blu-ray title of 2008.

Tomorrow's Nielsen VideoScan should reveal more. There is also the issue of how many this title would have sold on DVD if Blu-ray didn't exist. Is it 500,000 extra copies being sold, or perhaps just 500,000 less DVDs being sold with the sales being transferred to the (slightly more profitable) Blu-ray format?
