CNN's US election night stunt, in which reporter Jessica Yellin and rapper will.i.am appeared on set as three-dimensional "holograms", was little more than smoke and mirrors, physics experts say.
They looked quite fake to me, it was really just a superimposed image, as opposed to a real hologram that the people in the studio could see. The only cool thing about them was that when the camera moved, they rotated/moved accordingly (as if they were there), but that's easily done with CGI, although not in the "realtime" manner that it was done.
They could have used real hologram technology though, because it exists and is working, but I suspect it doesn't come out as well on camera.
