Sony: No Immediate PS3 Price Cut Due To Economic Downturn

In a recent Eurogamer interview, SCEE's David Reeves said that although there's the possibility of a price drop at some point in the near future, they have no plans for an immediate cut "due to the current economic downturn." Eurogamer than asked if Reeves thought the PS3 would always be the priciest system out there, and he replied:

"I think it will, yes. I'm not saying there are going to be any price cuts at all in the short term or the medium term. I'm not saying we don't need to do it - we are expensive. It is possible that as the cost [of manufacturing] comes down, we will be able to do it."

I think that with the encomony the way it is, it would be better to reduce the price that way you may sell more. But with the way Sony thinks it will not happen as suggested in the article.

I agree. The PS3 has below average sales.I could see a price cut at the the end of the year or early next year when HD hardware goes down a bit. Heck blu-ray burners are going for around 249.99,so I could about imagine what the PS3 hardware costs. It would be stupid business move to lower prices now. high prices are better then knowingly putting out a faulty product like MS did to get the jump on everyone(RROD)

Sony is projected to have a $2 billion loss for the year, after having made $2b last year (despite losing more on each PS3). I just really think they can't afford to make price cuts because this would drive sales and balloon the losses.

At the moment, more PS3 sales => more losses.

On the other hand, without PS3s in people's homes, game sales won't be high enough, and so there's less profit. You could argue they should take a temporary hit to get more PS3s into people's homes, and then make the money back through game sales, but it's all too risky in the current environment.

A classic rock and a hard place situation.

I think it's awesome that they lose money for each PS3 sold... since I hate Sony for being possibly the most evil of the big corporations.

Though I understand why people don't buy PS3s... there's really not many good PS3 exclusive games and now you can get a basic Xbox 360 console for $170 or so. And you can get $250 Blu-Ray players... I've seen them at Blockbuster and such.

The only viable solution I see where they can make up for a big cut of the market share, and eventually break even until they get rock solid is to come out w/a new simpler version of the PS3. This way they could rival WII, and the XBOX360 w/new features but a more lightweight product. Hence lower price. They're too stubborn though and prideful at that. I would sit down w/the big movie companies and tell it like it is. "This is what we're looking at and this is what we should do." They're accountable to a lot of Big Willys so before they even think about doing anything the red tape has to be dealt with as always.

1 they need to make it easier for the game programmers to program games. 2 Have a price drop on the console. But that main thing is make it easier to program games.

So they have a strict gaming network in regards to how they make them huh? Sony's a piece of work. Have to admit they're stuff not that bad, but as of now there's more rivals coming out w/equally great products for way lower prices. Vizio is 1.
