The French Senate has passed the controversial Internet Piracy Bill, although it is now a different version to the original one that caused quite a stir. The original version, championed by right wing president Sarkozy, was ruled unconstitutional by the French Constitutional Council. The bill was then later changed to remove the part that allowed a newly set up government agency to declare people guilty, without going through a court, and ban them from the Internet for up to a year. A judge now needs to be part of the process before any fines or bans can be handed down. The French Senate, controlled by Sarkozy's party, has now passed this amended version.
The Bill will now have to be passed in the National Assembly to be adopted.
