Blu-ray Now Cheaper, Close to DVD Pricing

A study has shown that Blu-ray movie prices are dropping, with new release pricing down 12% and a 33% drop in price for older titles.

According to NPD, the average price of a new release was down to $23.62 in July (down from $28.02 in May).

I've also noticed similar price decreases, from looking at the price charts on Digital Digest's own Amazon Blu-ray Price Index. There are now quite a lot of Blu-ray titles under $10 (81 at last count), and prices for new hit releases like Watchmen never went above $23.99, and was as low as $19.99 on occasions.

But will people start buying more Blu-ray movies, because price decreases are the last trick in the arsenal of studios, and it will start to negate the whole purpose of having a new format, which is increased profits. How low can you go, is the question.

What I'm waiting forward to is dual-format discs that have both Blu-Ray and DVD content on the same side of the same disc.

Because that way I won't feel like it's a ripoff since I can watch it on my old TVs, and on my HDTV.

Most of Disney's releases now come with both the Blu-ray and DVD editions, on separate discs, which is more expensive for Disney, but better for the consumer (if you get manage to get the disc on discount). Lots of them now come with digital copies as well, although it might be a bit of a pain to get them to play on your TV.

Yeah but the problem I have with that is that the DVD is an absolute barebones release... so I still end up buying the 2-disc DVD set (which is actually a ripoff since they put all the features on ONE disc and give you a Digital Copy, which is entirely useless to me since I can encode movies myself at a quality better than iTunes...)

Not to mention there hasn't been a Disney movie worth buying in a while anyway
