Forgetting to renew something and finding your services cut off is something that's happened to almost everyone. But what if Microsoft forgets to renew something it cuts off everything for everyone?
That was the case last week when Microsoft forgot to renew their Information Rights Management (IRM) certificate, which is used by Microsoft Office's Rights Management Service (RMS). RMS allowing users to control access to their own documents, but without a valid IRM certificate, users found that they were locked out of their own files.
It seems many IT managers found out the dangers of relying on someone else to implement access control on your own documents, and how easy DRM can fail if not properly maintained.
