LG's New Blu-ray Player Has 250GB Hard Drive

LG's new BD590 Blu-ray player will include a 250GB hard disk. The hard drive will be initially used to store VUDU movies, as well as the user's own contents such as pictures and music files.

Whether the new player will support Managed Copy, and hence allowing Blu-ray movies to be copied onto the 250GB HDD is unknown at present. 250GB would be enough to store anywhere between 4 to 10 Blu-ray movies, depending on the implementation of Managed Copy and whether you're copying the whole disc or just the movie.

In any case, the evolution of Blu-ray players from a simple disc player to the home's multimedia hub continues (in other words, expect standalone Blu-ray players to be more like the PS3, without the gaming), with today's players already capable of streaming online video, streaming your own files through DLNA, Internet connectivity and widgets to access your favourite website and information (YouTube, weather, stock ...), and now it has local storage as well.

Like the LG BD390, the new LG Blu-ray player has WiFi, BD Live, VUDU and DLNA, what's new is the 250GB hard drive. Now the first thing we thought of when we heard LG was including a hard drive was Managed Copy, but there's no mention of it in the press release. What is in there though is the ability to download VUDU movies, pictures, music and more to it. This is especially useful if your Blu-ray player isn't well connected since it allows you to sneaker net your content or to copy it over and play it back later. There's no mention of price or availability, but this guy does have two little brothers, the BD550 and BD570, that feature many of the same internet features, but don't have a hard drive.

The player is now available, and includes a built in CD ripper for easy conversion and storage of music on the player itself. Wouldn't it be nice one day to have something like this for DVD ripping or even Blu-ray ripping?
