There is one thing that I don't understand. These juries will award the record companies big dollars, but if your injured by a big company the jury will not award the big money. This is just so wrong.

I also think it's the copyright laws that are wrong, since the statutory damages that juries work from are designed for companies/corporations, not for individuals. It's insane to say that someone who shared music, not for profit as well, should be liable to tens of thousands of dollars for each song that is only worth 99 cents.Comment

Here's a good article from the EFF, which talks about why the awarded damages are inappropriate, with quotes from some of the judges attached the case stating the same opinion as well (the judge thought even the initial $222,000 amount was too high, let alone the 7 figure amounts).

Jammie Thomas-Rassett's lawyers have now asked for the damages to be reduced from $62,500 per song to $0. This is based on claims that the RIAA has yet to prove that any of Thomas-Rassett's has actually caused any financial harm to the record labels represented by the RIAA, in terms of lost sales.
