A release date has been confirmed for the 3D Blu-ray version of Avatar, but unfortunately, it will not be for everyone. Confirmation has come that Avatar, the 3D Blu-ray version, will be available in December. However, it will only be available to Panasonic customers.
Whether it will be available to customers that purchase a 3D capable TV during a special promotional period, or whether it will be available to all buyers of the 3D TV and other 3D equipment, including those that have already taken the plunge, is unknown. Also unknown is whether the title will be available for free.
The trend so far for major Blu-ray 3D releases has been for them to be released with 3D hardware, such as Samsung's Monsters vs Aliens, and Panasonic's current Coraline and Ice Age 3 deals. Only Sony's Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs has been released as a general release.
Avatar will be the first live action 3D blockbuster to be released on the Blu-ray 3D format.
