An Indian anti-piracy firm has revealed that they have used denial of service and other attacks against websites they targeted for anti-piracy actions.
The company, AiPlex, will normally seek action to be taken by the web host, to either contact the offending website owner in question, or to shut down the website account. If action is not forthcoming, then they take more drastic action.
"In such cases (when the web host or website owner does not take action), we flood the website with requests, which results in database error, causing denial of service as each server has a fixed bandwidth capacity," said Girish Kumar, managing director of AiPlex.
"At times, we have to go an extra mile and attack the site and destroy the data to stop the movie from circulating further," he also added, pointing to more serious forms of attack.
DoS and hacking are illegal in most countries, regardless of the intention.
