Nintendo's CEO Satoru Iwata believes that while piracy is a factor in game sales, good games will still make a good profit regardless of how rampant piracy is.
"Even with piracy, as long as we can create products which can attract attention from many consumers and which can greatly entertain them, that software can make it to the number one position of the hit software sales chart," Iwata said in a investor call.
Sales for Wii and DS hardware has been slowing recently, with the Wii coming under threat from the likes of Sony's PlayStation Move and Microsoft's Kinect. And although the DS is dominant in the portable video games market, easily outselling the PSP, it may soon also be under threat from the increasing number of smart phone games.
However, despite the poorer hardware showings, there are still games such as Super Mario Galaxy 2 for the Wii that have sold in record numbers.
Iwata did go on to say that while piracy isn't the only factor in determining the success of games, it is still an important factor which Nintendo will try to address, starting with new anti-piracy measures for the upcoming 3DS console.
