The latest iteration of the Humble Indie Bundle V has already generated $4 million in earnings, proving once again the strength of the "pay what you want" model.
All the games offered are DRM free, and while gamers can essentially choose to pay nothing for the basic pack, most gamers are in fact paying an average of $8.39 (at the time of writing). This disproves the commonly held notion that people would never pay for something that they can otherwise get for free, and also suggests that being DRM-free does not increase the chance a game is pirated at the expense of revenue.
This latest bundle continues on from the success of the first ever Humble Indie Bundle, released back in October 2010, by including some of the best indie games available.
This latest "V" bundle includes the popular and award winning indie games Amnesia: The Dark Descent, LIMBO, Psychonauts, and Superbrothers: Sword & Sorcery. Gamers can pay as low as 1 cent to get these games, but those that want them on Steam will have to pay at least $1. And if you pay more than the average, you also "unlock" 4 other, possible even better known, hit games: Bastion, Braid, Super Meat Boy, and Lone Survivor. As a bonus, buyers will also get the full soundtrack for a selected number of games.
Some gamers have paid as much as $1,000, but the top contributor if fellow indie game developer "Notch" Persson, the creator of Minecraft, with a contribution of $12,345.67.
Buyers can also choose where their money goes, to the developer, to the Child's Play charity, or a tip to the group that runs the Humble sales.
