CES: Samsung Talks Up Apple Partnership, Bezel Free Micro LED Technology

Samsung has announced an industry first deal with sometimes rival Apple that will see Samsung's 2019 TVs get access to iTunes movies and TV shows.

Apple will create a brand new app, designed specifically for Samsung, will allow Samsung TV users to access and purchase iTunes content. In addition, the app will integrate with Samsung's existing services, such as Bixby, to allow features such as voice search.

The deal is significant as other than the Windows app, iTunes has never been made available on non Apple devices.

Samsung's TVs will also feature AirPlay 2 support, joining the sets from brands like LG, Sony and Vizio.

Samsung's 2018 TVs will be also be getting the new iTunes app and AirPlay 2 support, via a firmware update.

"We look forward to bringing the iTunes and AirPlay 2 experience to even more customers around the world through Samsung Smart TVs, so iPhone, iPad and Mac users have yet another way to enjoy all their favorite content on the biggest screen in their home," said Eddy Cue, SVP of Internet Software and Services at Apple.

Samsung also showed off their next-generation modular Micro LED display, which promises a complete bezel-less experience that can be configured for various sizes and shapes.

These new Samsung displays are made up of individual modules of self-emissive Micro LEDs, and modules can be built up to build displays of various configurations, from the common 16:9 and 21:9 to unconventional aspect ratios like 32:9. And because the modules are bezel-less, they can be built up to enormous sizes, such as the 219-inch screen Samsung demonstrated at CES.

The technology won 2019 CES's Best of Innovation Award.
