Must Read This! Important Info About Divx

Hi.

ok ok, I am a programmer as well as building and maintaining computers. recently started to teach myself networking.

Now, I have a P133 with a 40GB 7200 RPM HDD (WD). I like upgraded it, put it that way.

And this is my server, ftp server and my backup server.

The rule with DIVX is that u must have a min spec of 233/266MHz to run DIVX (not a good quality)

I usually stun people, like I installed Windows 2000 PRO on a 486 DX2 66MHz and a P75 (and recieved special certs from Microsoft too!)

ok, I think I stunned again (maybe)

I hooked up everything, now the server contains some movies and I decided u know, let's watch it from that machine to my master machine (my PIII 800EB)

and it plays movies WITHOUT loss of quality and NO jerks!!!!!!! But how come? because it's through a network (takes a bit longer) plus it's running from a P133 machine! ok ok, local networks are fast but sometimes slow, but I mean, it plays bloody smoothly and fine from the P133 machine when viewing it on the PIII 800EB machine!

You would expect jerks or a/v synch but nothing here! and DMA mode is NOT EVEN ENABLED on the ftp server (P133) !!!!

normally with computers thers always a logical explaniation, but i cannot think of one.

Wait - what you are saying is that you can play a video file _stored_ on the P133 across the network and have the video _displayed_ on your 800Mhz machine?

I would hope so!!

Generic divx data rate = ~1Mbps
Generic crappy LAN data rate = 10Mbps
Generic crappy HDD transfer rate = 5 MBps

So if it wasn't working, I'd be upset. Ain't no reason not to plug your DVD drive into the slow machine and watch DVD's across the network - the data rate is still not going to be a problem.
