You can also consider getting a motherboard that utilises the chipset SiS655.

This is another chipset that supports the use of dual-channel DDR RAM. It costs a fraction of the Intel solution and compares favourably, according to this review. I just built a system for a friend using the very same motherboard. Performance is satisfyingly fast and there has been no stability issue so far.

I personally use the SiS645 chipset for my current system. It has been running fast and with no problem at all for more than one-and-a-half years. How is that for a user input?

Edit: just in case you had been left out of the CPU chipset world, SiS has improved dramatically from where they were years ago. You should give them credits for being at the fore-front of CPU chipset technological advances too.

            Suits you fine.

Intel is not for the typical users on the budget though. When I helped my friend purchase his SiS-based motherboard, we got it for AU$160+. Compare it to Intel e7205-based motherboards which will set one back by AU$400+. Both utilise Dual-channel DDR and both perform close to each others in a variety of applications. As far as I am concerned, the SiS-based motherboard is stable too, which negates any bias towards non-Intel chipsets being 'unstable.' I would rate the SiS-chipset as being of the best value here.

Of course! Now im not saying SiS are good or not, but i have an intel-based mobo now, and its worked fine for me for 3 years (PIII, 650MhZ). And damn do i love the P4's, up to 3.06 GHZ on the market

SiS-chipsets have very good value, being much cheaper than their Intel counterpart. I will not deny that Intel chipsets are excellent (I have the Intel815 chipset for my PIII and it performs sweetly and stably), but they cost a premium and hence are not budget-friendly. If I were getting a new P4 system, I would go for the SiS655 chipset (assuming the new 800MHz FSB chipset is not widely available yet at the time) and spend the (considerable) savings on other components.

P4 3.06GHz are not exactly budget-friendly either. Spending around AU$1000 for a CPU is no different than throwing money down the river. I would wait for a few more months till faster products are released and prices fall. I can then get the same CPU for a small fraction of the price paid by those who purchased it before or around this time.

Intel vs. AMD topics abound everywhere and have been done to death over and over and over again, all with no clear results as to which is superior in any kind of terms you care to name. Hence. Do not start another pointless argument.
