RNC, more standards mean more control by the people who develop the technology for profit. Wouldn't be too hard making a standalone that could plug into a PC to be programmed to play new codecs and stuff. Only reason why all the hardware manufacturers are stuck with simplicity is to save costs and to avoid scrutiny by the recording industry (Could possibly wind up with legal costs against supporting piracy)

In any case, I refuse to standardize anything as it gives way to patenting and charging for use. Look at DivX. Hard working people gave time and energy towards it's development, only now to be a grab with spyware. WMV9 is a copy of DivX anyhow. So many people steal idea'd and charge money for it after the standardization.
Government throws more money at a problem, so it looks like they are making a difference.
