Setting up my own FTP server.

    Hey guys.

Ok I got a problem does anyone know of any good software I should use to set up a FTP server off my own computer?

Also I have a Westell Wirespeed Firewall/DSL Router that is being a beeotch does anyone have any advice on how to open a port using one?

I need a program that will work with ease with a hardware firewall.

Do a google search for GuildFTPd or Bulletproof FTP (techno swares by bulletproof)

They are really easy to set up if you use the help file but once you get into configuring your router (if you got one) it sucks.

The only problem I have is getting it where people can connect outside the network... I can connect fine using localhost "127.0.0.1" but nothing else

ok: what you need to do:

            1) get another network card.
            2) put it in your server, and connect it directly to the modem, and the other to the router.
            3) set up your ftp program
            4) optional, but to install apache2triad to test files. it will be faster.

127.0.0.1 is localhost address. this never changes
192.168.x.x is your network IP for your computer. it is internal
x.x.x.x is your IP outside of your NAT, use this to go to your apache root

There was a post similar to this awhile back, but I don't feel like digging it up in the archives.

BulletproofFTP is the best server you'll find. I've tried em all, and it's definately what I recommend. Given you're forwarding :21, it should work without a problem

And not to question your intelligence or anything (), but you're using the actual ip and not, as chicken said, the local or network location right?

                Serv-U is what I use.

                It is a fine program.
Anyone can use it free, but if you want to use it fully, you havta pay for it.

If you decide to try it, it is complicated at first. The program is an advanced program, and it functions with fewer incompatibilities than Bullet Proof FTP.
Government throws more money at a problem, so it looks like they are making a difference.

The router SHOULD tell your proper IP.

Or go to some website like my-ip.com or something.

Disconnect the modem to the router and plug it straight in the PC - then if your using Win XP or 2000 go to start > run > cmd

then type in ipconfig /all and it should tell you the IP address. Then simply plug the modem back into the router

Sorry can't do that. It comes from a regular phone line into the external modem then turns into ethernet into my comp. And I don't have a DSL modem in my computer
