    8.5GB DVD+R discs

hmmmmm atlast thats what i was waiting for now will wait few months before gettin new dvd burner hope dvd-r follows it.

"Expect double-layer, almost double-capacity DVD+R drives and media to hit the stores next April, members of the DVD+RW alliance say. The technology, co-developed by drive maker Philips, and media specialists Verbatim and Mitsubishi Kagaku, adds a second recording layer to a standard-thickness DVD+R disc, taking the medium's capacity from 4.7GB to 8.5GB. "

Seems like as soon you buy somehing, v. 2 comes out 1.5 times as fast!..!

Thats nuts. Who cares about the DVD forum.
Formats are due out in Blue Disk format next year.
Capacities will start about 27Gb per disk, and development promises capacities to reach near 200GB per CD in the near future. I wish I remembered where I read it, as I would give you the link.

Opens the door for High quality HDTV Rich media and Long recording times for the future media. Now you will be able to watch Hollywood Trash movies in even better detail!

    Doh.
Government throws more money at a problem, so it looks like they are making a difference.

I read somewhere that blue laser discs manufacturing is current too expensive, and that DVD±R/RW discs will be around here for a while.

A translation of this is that the powers-that-be want to squeeze every drop of profits from DVD±R/RW first, before they move on to blue laser.

I expect blue laser HD-DVD movies to be as popular as normal DVDs now before blue laser recorders are being sold at a reasonable price to the public, but the only way this is going to happen is for HD TVs to be widespread (as in most people can actually afford a good HDTV display) and there are tons of HD-DVD movies for sale. This won't happen for a while, since the DVD Forum or whomever responsible for the HD-DVD format is still bickering about what format it should be in (there are several rival formats, just like for DVD+ and DVD-) and also about copy protection, which is also why the DVD format wasn't released earlier than it was.

yes these blue laser disks are old news, and are still in experimental phase. also u need to replace ur hardware for able to use them means that will take a lot time , not few years maybe half a decade. since then 8.5 gb is what we gonna use. also technology chnging so fast we may see some other stuff which is compatible with recent dvd players/recoders.

Do current DVD burners support these "double-capacity" discs? Or do they work only in specific (presumably future models)?

Some of the articles on this topic appear to indicate that current burners will, after a firmware update, be fully capable of utilizing 8.5Gb burnable media...

Pioneer have indicated that none of their current range of DVD Writers will be able to burn dual layer discs. Traxdata are at the minute looking at producing 8.5GB DVD discs for an OEM customer for next May. On another note, the blue laser systems, Sony's and Blu Ray, are expected to come way way down in price in the middle of 2004 in order to compete with the Dual format. It is also expected that Sony will have a 50GB version of blue laser available by 2005 with 100GB coming around 2008. For someone who has a 60" projector screen at UXGA 1280x1024, like me, this is the format i will be investing in, not Dual layer 8.5GB. Im hoping to not have to use a progressive scanning unit anymore in a year or so. Only problem is that the blue laser systems are not backward compatible with the current red laser systems. A dual system is bound to be introduced for standalones.

i won't run out and buy the first dual-layer 8.5gb, or blu-ray 27gb, systems when they become first available, simply because they will probably trash 50% or more of the discs burned. i will give the firmware at least until the 2nd or 3rd generation, or whenever they will become stable.

                      This is almost certainly true

I think April is the earliest expected date for dual layer burners, although we might have to wait much longer before dual layer media is affordable + reliable. Even now, there are hardly any 8x media around, even though there are quite a few 8x drives.
