Hi all,, new here and hope this hasn't been asked somewhere that I should have read first. Well, anyway,, here goes: I loaded down DVD Shrink thinking it would also all copying VHS tapes to DVD but the guide mentions nothing about it.. Is it not a part of that software like it is on the ones you buy? Also,, Is making copies of DVDs that you own and copies of VHS that you own ilegal. I thought that the Surpreme Court decreed that making copies of your own personal property was legal.. Windhawk.

to copy vhs you either purchase an internal card for that purpose (good ones cost about $200), an external device (good USB2 ones cost about $200), or a DV camera with analog VHS pass-thru capability (cheap ones start at $500). I'm unaware of any Supreme Court rulings...but people have been making copies since the first civilian VCRs hit the market in 1978. After you've captured your VHS you can prep it to run thru DVDShrink to save you some space on the DVD. -
Thank you so very m uch for your response, I have an internal ATI all in wonder 8500 card that will capture the video. I just wasnt ed to know if DVD Shrink would have the capability to convert the captured Video into DVD format so it could be burned directly to a DVD with my DVD burner.
Why I asked about the court ruling was, DVD X copy has been band from being sold. In my local paper it has been warned not to buy or use software like DVD shrink because they are illegal. I was just curious concerning all of this and wondered if this forum knew of what the present ruleing was. Thanks,, WindhawkComment

Local communities and merchants might have restrictions just in case somewhere down the road some court beholden to the Hollywood elite leftists declares all copying illegal by judicial fiat (activism)....but, so far, it's perfectly legal to make copies of VHS tapes and DVDs that you have purchased in order to have a backup in case the original gets scratched. DVD Shrink can be used to shrink VHS capture...but first the capture files have to be authored into the DVD files format with a VIDEO_TS folder containing .VOB, .IFO, and .BUP files. This is done by using an authoring program such as TMPGenc DVD Author...then the VIDEO_TS folder can be imported into DVD Shrink. There has been an action brought in a US District court by MPAA in an effort to ban a software company's product...but I haven't heard the result. It's a sure bet that MPAA did its research and selected a judge it feels it can persuade...but whatever the decision, it'll be appealed to the district appelate court...and then to the Supreme Court...and even if an activist judge decides the product should be banned, that decision is only good for the region he can impose his edicts on, and doesn't become the law of the land unless the Supremes go along ( and by 5-4 they don't owe their jobs to the Hollywood left).Comment
