To admin and moderators - re Forum Rules

Maybe it is just coincidence, but lately there has been an influx of rule-breakers, especially with respect to cross-posting and piracy.

Is it at all possible to ensure people have read the forum rules before they make their first post?

E.g. When they sign up, they are immediately taken to the rules and something like an "I have read the rules and accept them" box needs to be checked before they are allowed to post.

I know most people won't read them, but they aren't lengthy and how many posts from newbies have we seen that said, "I didn't know" or "I was in a hurry and thought if I posted in 10 forums I might get a quick response" etc etc etc?

Worth a shot? Or technically impossible anyway?

There is actually already a link on the sign up agreement page to the rules page, but I doubt anyone even reads the agreement, let alone go to the rules page (certainly, when I sign up for a forum, I never read the rules or agreement - but that's because I'm a nice boy and I never break any rules )

I might put some or all of the rules on the agreement page - it will just mean a bigger chunk of text that people ignore on signup

Just wondering if there's a way to take 'em to the rules before allowing them to post, that's all. Like, the minute they click "yes, I agree", they are automatically taken to the rules! Is this possible, or desirable?

IMO, the problem is becoming epidemic (if it wasn't already, and I'm sure you've had your hands full on this for years now).

Good luck with that, we have the same problem at the DVDD site, most of the Beta's have links in their sigs now to cut down on the searching and posting of links to the FAQ's and Guides and, unlike here, we don't even have a fixed set of rules. But maybe that's a good thing since my sig goes on & on & on anyway.

I'm just trying making some suggestions - all influence, no power. I'm just sick and tired of helping someone to find out he's a pirate. This happens all too frequently. Thankfully, we are all pretty vigilant.

It's really up to admin and the mods. I don't really wanna be some "agent of change". It's not my forum - I don't pay for its upkeep.

Some of the mods here (and others) also have links and highlights to the FAQs in their sigs and cynthia, in particular, has reported great success with the FAQs in reducing PMs at least. Plus the knowledge is there, on record.

As for the DVD Decrypter Forum, I find it a great resource, although I'm not all that active (doom9 and here keep me pretty busy, DVD-wise). One thing I have observed at the DVDD Forum, and this is no criticism of anybody concerned with the administration of this board, is that L UK! tends to ensure the rules are followed. At least, this is my objective view of how that board is run.

Anyway, nice to make your acquaintance.
