you guys seem to be making mountains out of molehills. The search companion is just part of the exporer shell.. Expand that window, and you'll see. Then click View -->Explorer Bar and check something besides "Search".

I have that before. I can't remember what I installed that made it do that. I do remember that the fix was to edit a entry in the registry.

I got the info what to do from the MS site.

I remember know what it was. I needed a easy way to print directory listings.

I will google and try to find what I used before from the MS site.

I found what I wanted. Look at this link and it will show you what to do with the registry.

Look at the bit about the search companion.

It's very simple and it should be possible to backup the registry. Otherwise, a complete reinstall would be needed.

The easiest way is to use the run command and type regedit. Once, the registry is loaded select export and make sure all is selected. This will export the entire registry. If something goes wrong you can import it back.

from previous posts, alienfinder, you seem to be having a lot of troubles with your PC. if this were the only problem cropping up, i would say 'go for it' and edit the registry...

i still recommend you format if possible, is there any reason you don't want to? maybe we can help with that?

I really want to format, but I have lots of data and I don't know what would be the best method of back-up.I don't have Nero either.

You could install CDBurnerXP. It burns data CD's and DVD's and is freeware. (recommended by Cynthia in the past)

I also find at times like this a USB memory stick is useful.

Another option would be to get another HDD (which is good to have anyway) the prices have tumbled. You could use the built in XP back up program to back up to the HDD to be sure you have all your important files. It wouldn't be a bad idea to leave your data and important files on different HDD anyway.

a second hard disk/usb drive is easily the best way to go when formatting

that, or a couple of dvd-rw...

Should I buy an external or internal hardisk?I heard that external ones need 'towers'.

IMO internal is the way to go

shouldn't cost too much, prices are extremely low nowadays...
