yeah i saw this on cnn the other day. i run it on a lap-top, not connected to net at the moment so i'm not too concerned about support and security updates ceasing. but it's time IMO, it's old.

I think it is a good move by M$ to get people to upgrade to a more modern secure OS. How many OS's can they keep supporting? as they noted all the existing previous support things will be left. Also windows ME and XP SP1 will no longer have support provided.
Also no longer supported, DOS, Windows for Workgroups and Windows NT
It's sorta like going to Ford for parts for a Model T
it had a good 8 year run, think it's time to put 98 SE to rest
Its just too bad that the US space program and NASA cannot follow this same concept when it comes to the shuttle, a seriously oudated, extremely expensive to maintain system that has electronics that are over 30 years old and must be special made to continue to support it.
Ironic isnt it. And how old is Win98SE?!!!! Mine still works perfectly and I dont intend to replace it....at least on that machine. For a newer pc I would definately run the newer OS without a doubt. But even that old Win98SE machine will/has reached its limits with program software and finding replacement hardware.....not unlike the shuttle or a model T. Unless there are going to be specialized hardware/software manufacturers to help those old machines. Just like the shuttle, it would require special built replacement hardware/software/electronics.
Imagine......even your old pc running Win98SE has about 40 percent more computing power than the current computer systems on board the shuttles.
And our old 286....heck the old TRS-80 machines had more computing power than the Apollo capsules!!!!
Ironic...isnt it.
Someone call NASA and tell them to get with the program!!!!
You're gonna wish you had something that used as little resources as 98 after Vista comes along. I don't think that Gates quite understands that the OS is just supposed to be the housing for all the programs, and not the end all and be all of the system, sucking up every meg a ram you can afford, scads of cpu usage and you'd also get a rocking vid card too. Just to run the OS? It'll be a sad day indeed when support finally ends for XP.

Indeed. But it seems that was always the way it went....as each new OS came out from MS, it required more hardware horsepower just to run the OS efficiently, or at least run without alot of crashing and bashing. I always thought that silly free resources indicator in control pannel was a joke...often saying 94 or so percent free. Ha! It lied.
