my phone company is just rolling out an 8 megabit connection and only part of that is for broadband and you guys are already measuring 12 megbit down.

wonder when cable will hit the 20 megabit dream pipe?

are all those unlimited download connections?

In a lot of foreign countries they measure your downloads and charge extra
when you reach a certain limit in gigabytes over a certain time period.

Optimum on line has given me consistent speeds. I usually check a few times a week.
No extra charges for the basic service. They do offer a higher download speed for an extra charge. I figured at these speeds I didn't need to spend more money.

Its called capping in the UK. They do cheap broadband packages starting at £15 per month but capped usually at 2GB per month. £20 per month is usually still capped at 5GB per month. Mine is £24 per month for unlimited. I don't need unlimited but there was no capping when I started a few years ago. I could easily settle for 10GB per month (2 computers sharing) and have it cheaper. I really need to sort something else.

My line can only do 2.5Mb/s download and that is only possible in the last few months. It is known as ADSL Max and does up to 8Mb/s.

Comcast doesn't do anything like that; I had a spotty connection issue a few months ago, related to upgrades on their end; After I complained enough & had numerous line techs sent to the house, they decided to fix it & gave me a couple mo. free service to make it all better.

I get about 6 up and 1.7 down but my cable company wants me to think I'm going faster? 12.7/2.04Mbps.
                    What 's going on?

that's the difference between cable and dsl, dsl is dedicated bandwidth but cable is shared, when nobody in your neighborhood is using any bandwidth you can max out, during peak times you just get your share.

course it depends upon what your street/node has, but anything can bog down, get enough people downloading 1.5 MB/s on dsl and something upstream will throttle the bandwidth.

I ran the tests several times at both sites and these results were typical. I ran one then the other and then went back and forth. My cable company may only be reporting to its hub hence the faster speeds?

                            jmet,

I shudder everytime you post in a thread & I see your download speed!

But, look at it this way; at least your 5X faster than dialup! lol
