Actually this issue has been settled long ago with US copyright laws. As long as the class is not open to the general public, teachers and students can show and view scenes from tv, films, etc. to the class. It must be a closed class (meaning that not anyone can simply come in to watch) and of couse no admission can be charged. A recent decision also clarified that teachers could copy scenes from films to show them to students in the classroom without violating copywright laws.
Here is a link to the news story that covers this very issue:
Film teachers use scenes all the time to teach film language techniques in a film class. It would be nearly impossible to teach a film course if one had to get permission from each copyright holder in order to show students an example of a film technique.
