    File Size Problem With TMPGEnc

First time I've poseted here, I hope I'm doing it right.

My main problem is with TMPGEnc. If I input an mpeg-2 file that is originally encoded to 9800 kbps and I recode it to 6000 kbps (same aspect ratio- same resolution- without audio) Why is the output file larger than the original file? This doesn't make any sense to me. Any comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Well... ALMOST any comments, maybe not from that person that's posting the stuff about the divx software... but anyone who genuinely wants to help me... please do so. Thanks.

I would speculate that you've used TMPGEnc's default setting - and actually created an MPEG1 file (lowere compression than MPEG2)...

no, I used mpeg-2 encoding (i cant remeber if I used the wizzard for dvd creation or not- i've done it both ways) I think I used constant bitrate..... which after doing a little reading I discovered that VBR may be the way to go, so I'm in the process of tinkering with the settings for the different types of VBR... But thanks for replaying... think of anything else, please don't hesitate to post again... I'll take any info I can get.

I suppose another question I should ask is when using VBR, what settings produce the best results (exelent quallity, but smaller file size)? Thanks again
