New DVD drives compatible with Compaq?

I've been using a Compaq Presario 7QS with the Pioneer DVR-103 drive to write DVDs.

After about 100 DVDs and all of 1 1/2 months out of warrenty, the drive has died. Does anyone know if the current Pioneer drives are compatible with the Compaq machines? I understand the 103 was an OEM version of the A03, and I don't know if I can buy a straight A04 or whatever the current number is and expect it to just work. Any ideas? Anyone else had to replace a DVD drive in a Compaq?

Seems like any standard DVD-R drive should work just fine. Both the Sony 500a and the Pioneer A04 were recognized by the machine.

Software campatibility is a different issue, ick!
