black bars on left/right of screen

authored video with menu using nero 6 and the video has a "squished" look and the people look skinnier than they are. What has caused this?

I called up the file and noticed that the black bars are there before authoring (in the thumbnails in the nero vision - I suppose) and I never noticed before.

When I double click on them in the folder they are stored in, the thumbnails don't show black bars and the media player's window plays them without the black bars.

have you tried using the "widescreen & lb" settings on your dvd player ?

the black bars are there in the thumbnails on the content page when I "add video". When I look at the thumbnails in the folder they are stored in there are no black bars and when I play them in windows media player, there are no black bars.

It's in the nero vision 3 that I am using, (I'm pretty sure), I've sent nero an email, but haven't heard back from them yet.

I know if change the aspect ratio to widescreen settings it fixes the squished video problem, but then the video has black all around it, rather than just on the right and left.

If nero doesn't get back to me soon, I'll probably go with that as I've been trying to get this video done since last fall.

This is undoubtedly the effect of an anamorphic transformation.

Go with your widescreen option. What you see in your thumbnails are what is actually on the VOBs. For display, they are anamorphically stretched horizontally by 33% to make it all look right.
