I've been working on it for a couple afternoons, and have not yet been able to get the files down under the 4.5 gig limit......I've stripped everything out I can, and now I'm stuck........I know there are ways to re-encode the video, and make everything smaller, but I don't want to kill the quality......suggestions appreciated

I believe the only way to keep the quality is to split the dvd into 2 disks. IFOedit has an option whereby you can divide the movie onto 2 disks and it will keep all the menu/chapter information.
There is a guide on this site and doom9 detailing what needs 2 be done.

Run ReMpeg2. Resize the BitRate. The proper size can be determined using a BitRate calculator (online one here).
