actually vdieo time on dvdr

May sound dumb but how much actually tiem can one actually put on one dvdr
-assuming ntsc all region dvd -
the dvd disc says 120 minutes printed on it but I have some movie dvd-5 that are over 230 minutes,
does it have to do with bit rates?
