Backup to RW possible? (Newbie alert)

I've just tried to burn my very first DVD, without success.

Writer is a new LG-4040B. I followed the instructions in the Quick DVD Backup Guide (very good, by the way, thank you!), and checked the resulting directory files with PowerDVD. I them created an ISO image with ImgTool and burnt that with DVD Decrypter.

As this is my very first go, I thought I'd best use rewriteable media to iron out the bugs, so wrote to a TDK DVD-RW (1x).

The burn appeared to complete ok, but the disk couldn't be read. So I erased it with the Erase Disk option in Roxio ECDC and now the disk can't even be recognised.

Bad luck? Bad disk? Or a total failure to understand something fundamental here?

Did you place ALL of the DVD-related files (.IFOs, .BUPs, .VOBs) into a folder/directory named VIDEO_TS (MUST be all capitals)?

Yes I did -- seems to be a missing step in the guide (unless *I* missed it!) but ImgTool caught it and insisted I do it.

But I'm not sure its the structure that's the problem...?: after burning the disk Windows explorer didn't see any files on it. Now attempting to even mount it gives "bad media", "drive not ready", "disk not DVD recordable" depending upon the application.

Could I simply have done something to destroy the disc?

I had a pig of a job recovering a Direct CD formatted CD/RW a day or two back. Couldn't do it with CD Creator. I think it was Nero in the end that erased it
This isn't a learning curve ... this is b****y mountaineering!
